The Volkswagen ID Buzz is probably the most whimsical, fun, and unique electric vehicle we had in the United States and I was excited to have it back. However, it’s now getting delayed.
The ID Buzz was discontinued in 2025 and took a break this year. It was suposed to come back for 2027. Now, it won’t return until 2028.
Overpriced and delayed, but still cute AF
I was so excited for the ID Buzz’s return.
To be honest, I was totally fine with the original electric minivan. The cute color choices, tubular body, and creative storage solutions had me sold.
Maybe I was just starving for something unique in a sea of bland electric SUVs. My colleague kept reminding me that it was super expensive despite having horrendous mileage and none of the charm of the original. And I have to admit, it was pretty silly that the ID Buzz didn’t come with any camping stuff. That was sorta the whole point…
But Volkswagen listened. Sort of. The 2027 Volkswagen ID Buzz was still going to be expensive, but you could pay even more to get the Tourer trim, which would give you a bed and blackout shades and a dining set. These changes will still be here when the Buzz returns in 2028.
“The 2028 ID Buzz brings together meaningful customer-focused enhancements in a single launch, further elevating the ownership experience and strengthening the vehicle’s appeal,” the automaker said in a statement, according to Automotive News.
I guess I can’t say the delay is surprising. The Buzz faced a lot of challenges in the United States market, selling about 6,100 units due to its high price point and miserable 200 mile range. Competitors in the same space offered a lot more for less. They just weren’t cute at all.
Ongoing tariffs and other costs have probably made things even more daunting for the Buzz, which is made in Germany.
Thanks, Trump. You have denied us of the ID Buzz for yet another year. When will the suffering end?
