Ford CEO Jim Farley has just reminded us that a legendary Mustang is on its way.
The Mustang GTD is coming in 2027, and this includes a special version called “Spirit of America.” It was introduced way back in January 2025, but you may have forgotten all about it. If that’s the case, Farley just sent out a tweet to remind you.
“For our latest Ford Mustang GTD, we’re honoring American race car driver Craig Breedlove, who in 1965 smashed the 600mph land speed barrier…rocketing across Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats in his turbo-jet powered Spirit of America. Craig paired American ingenuity with pure courage and grit to become the first person in history to reach 500mph and 600mph,” he wrote. “Our new Mustang GTD Spirit of America features a special livery, inspired by Craig’s iconic vehicle. This is just one of the exciting updates coming to Mustang GTD in 2027.

What’s the Spirit of America all about?
Honestly, the reminder comes at a good time. It’s been a bit of a bummer being an American car enthusiast, with the Trump Administration creating stricter and stricter regulations for foreign automakers and freakazoids using Tesla’s Full Self-Driving mode as if its autonomous all over American highways.
We’ve become sort of isolated from the rest of humanity, left in a sci-fi horror movie full of malfunctioning robotaxis and big, depressing SUVs. In all seriousness, the U.S. is being a bit cut off from the rest of the world’s innovation. As most countries move towards an all-electric future, we’re fighting back and not allowing any of those here. And our alternatives are not that exciting.
All we really had to look forward to was Ford’s cheap electric pickup truck.
Well, Farley has reminded us that there’s still something to celebrate in America: the Mustang. It’s the country’s best-selling sports car for a reason. And now, we’re nearing the arrival of the Ford Mustang GTD Spirit of America.
Ford wrote: “Mustang has been uniquely American since 1965, from its V8 power to its iconic galloping horse logo emblazoned across a red, white and blue badge. Mustang GTD Spirit of America represents more than Mustang’s performance legacy. It honors the American spirit of ingenuity and courage in the face of challenge.”
The Spirit of America is inspired by Craig Breedlove, who became the first person to break the 500- and 600-mile-per-hour barriers on land. He was an American amongst a ton of Europeans attempting to take on the Salt Flats. He pushed boundaries, and that’s what the Spirit of America wants to embody.
The fastest Mustang ever
The Mustang GTD Spirit of America has a Performance White body with twin racing stripes in both Race Red and Lightning Blue. Get it? Red, white, and blue. America. Huh? Huh?
The sporty and powerful Mustang has plenty of carbon fiber elements designed to improve the hefty vehicle’s aerodynamics, such as a front splitter, rear diffuser, and spoiler. It also comes with the Mustang GTD Performance Package to match the aggressive looks to real performance.
The Spirit of America has 815 horsepower, 664 lb-ft of torque, and a top speed of 202 miles per hour. This will be the fastest street-legal Mustang ever.
Americans are conflicted about the Mustang GTD
Hearing of a Mustang that can go over 200 miles per hour is, at first, quite exciting to hear. America!!!
However, a lot of car enthusiasts have sorta poo-pooed the whole thing. Just what the car community needs: extreme judgment and wet blankets. The reason for the salt? The Mustang GTD is expensive as heck. It has a base MSRP of $325,000. The Spirit of America with the Performance Package will be even more.
Meanwhile, the 2027 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray (the base model) can reach over 200 mph while costing below six figures.
Said one hater: “I would argue Mustangs over $100,000 don’t honor anyone, they just spit in the face of every single person that ever was a Ford fan. I would argue that if your grandfather were alive today, he would disown you and fire you. Because you ruined his legacy. Greedy.”
Another added: “Yeah, see how many $300K+ Mustangs ya sell. How many you making? 100? 75?”
It’s a valid criticism to note the rising costs of cars. The average price of a new car is nearly $50,000, and special sports cars are obviously no longer attainable for most Americans. It’s a bit of a bummer. However, the Mustang GTD Spirit of America is a special edition vehicle. It’s not really meant to be cheap. It’s not really meant to be mass-produced.
I think those who love powerful special edition Mustangs will eat this up. The rest of us can just be happy that America is still making cool cars after all.
