Jaguar Finally Reveals Why It Ditched Its Iconic Lineup For the Type 01: It Needed This Shocking Pivot to Survive

I think nobody on this entire planet was prepared for Jaguar’s “Copy Nothing” brand makeover. It wasn’t really the pink and the lowercase that threw people off. It was the vehicle.

As we have learned more about the Jaguar Type 01, I think it has begun to grow on many car enthusiasts and journalists. It sounds like it’s a blast to drive, which has probably helped some ignore its appearance and the aforementioned bad marketing.

However, it’s still quite a shock that Jaguar has abandoned gas-powered vehicles in favor of a very futuristic yet simple electric vehicle. The classy, sporty beauty of Jaguar’s older cars feels completely ignored in favor of a new direction that seems… So regular. Why did Jaguar pivot to EVs?

We finally have some answers.

Jaguar needed a change to survive

Jaguar’s Managing Director, Rawdon Glover, discussed the vision behind the Type 01 a bit more in Evo, a British magazine. And, unsurprisingly, it came down to money.

According to Glover, Jaguar’s old business model, which revolved around the premium segment, wasn’t profitable for the automaker. In fact, he felt Jaguar wouldn’t have even survived if they kept doing what it was doing before. Yes, they had “created some brilliant products,” including some “best in class,” but that competitive segment was relentless.

No matter how beautiful or perfectly engineered the cars were, Jaguar felt it was doomed. Doing the same thing over and over felt like insanity. They had to rip up the rulebook and start over.

Glover said: “It wasn’t sustainable for us to continue as we were. A lot of brand management is small, little changes … It’s about tweaks here and there. This wasn’t one of those changes … It really needed to be a big … step.”

And this was a massive step. Jaguar had to scrap its entire lineup, including the XE, XJ, F-Type, and E-Pace. Everything. The Jaguar Type 01 has no engine. It has nothing in common. It looks completely different from anything Jaguar has done. The brand was taking the idea of a complete change of direction quite seriously.

It was a gamble. Most automakers just swap an engine for a battery, slap an LED strip across the front, and call it a day. Jaguar has abandoned everything it’s known for.

While the pink makeup brand-style advertisement may not have been the best choice (and that guy was fired, we believe), the Jaguary Type 01 itself could still be exactly what the automaker needs to survive.

Jaguar claims that over 50,000 people have already expressed interest in the powerful, imposing electric GT. But I’ll see if people put their money where their mouth is. The United States is seeing less interest in electric vehicles right now. Well, unless it’s the Ford F-150 Lightning for some reason. But EV sales are dwindling overall, prompting many automakers to pivot back to gas and hybrid models (losing billions in the process).

In that sense, Jaguar is definitely doing something different. It’s going all in on electric. With no other options. It’s the Type 01 or nothing.

This is Jaguar’s final chance, when you really think about it. And despite the horrendous backlash, the team largely felt it was still its best bet. There must be something very special about the Type 01. And I think the answer is there once you get behind the wheel.
