A lot of attention has been on the upcoming Ford Fathom, which has been grabbing headlines for its $30,000 price tag. And yes, it’s cool that it’s cheap and uses a new Universal Electric Vehicle Platform meant to streamline production and use fewer parts.

But… It’s just a truck. Every leak and sneak peek we’ve seen shows a pretty basic and expected pickup truck.

That’s probably what a lot of Americans want, to be honest. America loves the Ford F-150 (it was the best-selling vehicle in the country for a decade). I’m sure the idea of buying a cheap, electric version of the Ford F-150 is quite appealing to some families.

But I’ve been thinking about the Ford Mustang truck.

Meet the Mustang truck

Ford is always thinking of new ways to use the “Mustang” name, sometimes for evil. We have the electric SUV, which already feels like a stretch, but Ford has also been toying with the idea of an off-roading Mustang and a pickup Mustang.

There have been a lot of whispers and rumors about the Mustang truck, but we finally have solid evidence that it has existed all along. We weren’t crazy! Well, not for this reason.

Ford Heritage Fleet Manager Matt Korczyk recently shared a set of images of the Mustang Ute. Yes, a Mustang pickup. And it’s not an AI rendering. It’s a concept developed by the Ford EVB Metal Shop.

Korczyk wrote: “[It was built] as a way to train apprentices by allowing them to get real-world, hands-on experience by way of building a concept car. The team took a normal Mustang and turned it into a handcrafted, one-off concept ‘Ute.’”

It apparently took hundreds of hours to build. But it seems it was meant to moreso showcase trade skills rather than make a running vehicle.

Does the Mustang truck actually run?

To be honest, I don’t know. It sorta sounds like it was just a design showcase for the team.

We can only see the exterior, which is bright orange and pretty handsome. It looks powerful and capable. However, we can’t see the powertrain. Is there even an engine?

Is the Mustang truck coming out?

Ford has never announced a Mustang truck.

Instead, we are getting a lot of solid hints about a possible off-roading Mustang. Some even believe it may be a part of Ford’s mysterious new EV lineup. I’m not sure about that, but it seems like Ford wants this to happen in general.
