Geely Auto Group will start selling its vehicles in Canada in a few months. Well, next year, but same thing, and it sounds more dramatic.
Back in March 2026, Canada opened its borders to Chinese EVs, announcing a first-come, first-served import quota of 49,000 vehicles. Canada also lowered its tariff rate on Chinese EVs from 16.1% to 6.1%, effectively breaking up with the United States and moving to China. This has left the U.S. government pretty salty, and it announced a petty 50% tariff on vehicles imported from Canada.

Meanwhile, American citizens are just jealous. It’s not like we’re getting cheap Chinese EVs any time soon. We’re stuck with the Ford Fathom. And things are about to get even harder to watch as Geely throws its hat in the ring.
Geely’s long-term commitment to Canada
We don’t have exact dates, but Geely plans to sell its vehicles in Canada sometime next year. Geely also hasn’t announced which cars it will sell in Canada. We also don’t know how much they will sell for.
There have been some hints along the way, however. Geely has been hiring and building a corporate team in Canada since earlier this year, for both Geely itself and its luxury division, Zeekr. We can reasonably assume they plan to offer a wide range of options for the Canadian market. This could include anything from the electric Geely EX5 SUV to the high-performance luxury electric shooting brake Zeekr 001.

“We are entering this market with a long-term commitment, bringing our global technology and engineering capabilities to Canadian drivers while building strong local partnerships and the support customers need to feel confident in choosing Geely,” said Bryan Wu, Managing Director of Geely Auto Canada.
Geely is the first major Chinese automaker to announce its plans for Canada, but others will likely follow. Geely will have to compete with brands like BYD, Chery, and Dongfeng. Geely is already a part owner of brands such as Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus, which are available in Canada. This means Canada could get Polestar’s cool new EVs.
