BMW has revealed the new 7 Series featuring its Neue Klasse design and technology, in what it describes as its most extensive model update ever. Now in its seventh generation, the 7 Series is the first vehicle to get the Neue Klasse treatment. It will start production and launch worldwide in July 2026.

It’s no surprise that the BMW 7 Series has been a highly anticipated model in its upcoming lineup. There have been plenty of leaks, spy photos, and rumors leading up to the premiere on April 22nd, 2026, with car enthusiasts wanting to catch a glimpse of the newest BMW 7 Series design.

“With the Neue Klasse, BMW has adopted a new and distinctive approach to front-end design that will provide a clear identity and high recognition factor across all the brand’s models,” a press release stated.

“The new BMW 7 Series embodies the specific interpretation of this new design language for the luxury segment. By combining its established qualities — sportiness and dynamism, luxury and comfort — with Neue Klasse design principles, it fits seamlessly into its lineage and, at the same time, provides a clear look ahead to the appearance of upcoming BMW models. Its distinct front-end design is reserved exclusively for the BMW luxury class.”

Choose your BMW 7 Series

In the past, we’ve touched upon the confusing naming system for BMW’s models, and you may want to check that guide for reference right now. The 7 Series comes with gas-powered options (the 740 and 740 xDrive) featuring a six-cylinder inline engine, as well as electric options (i7 50 xDrive and i7 60 xDrive).

The gas-powered 7 Series has an increased output over the last generation, with 394 horsepower thanks to a new turbocharger. The 740 xDrive can hit 60 miles per hour in less than 5 seconds. The electronically limited top speed is 155 miles per hour. The BMW 740 has a base MSRP of $99,800, and the 740 xDrive starts at $102,800.

The two i7 models will also be available at launch, with BMW really pushing an electric agenda with the 7 Series reveal. The drive is described as comfortable, effortless, and luxurious, with zero emissions. The sound-isolated electric motors are virtually silent, although BMW has optional driving sounds. The high-voltage battery features the new cylindrical cell from BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, offering a 350-mile range. The BMW i7 can be charged from 10 to 80% in just 28 minutes. It’s nowhere near the Chinese record, but you’ll have a whole cinema to distract you as the vehicle charges.

The BMW i7 50 xDrive has 449 horsepower, a 0-60 time of 5.3 seconds, and a top speed of 130 mph. The BMW i7 60 xDrive has 536 horsepower, can reach 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, and has a top speed of 149 mph. The 50 starts at $106,200 and the 60 starts at $124,700.

There will also be an M Sport Package and M Sport Package Professional to add more aerodynamic features, upgraded brakes, and darker accents. The Professional even has special darkened crystals in the headlights and an M Sport braking system with black-painted calipers.

The BMW 750e xDrive PHEV is coming in 2027.

Neue Klasse exterior design: simplified and clean

The biggest design change is to BMW’s iconic kidney grille. It’s now illuminated for a bolder, more futuristic look that “etches the car’s appearance into memory,” with angled, narrow two-section headlights on either side. With the car’s radar, cameras, sensors, and washer nozzles hidden from the naked eye, the front end of the vehicle is bold, expansive, and clean. The low- and high-beam headlights only become visible when switched on, making the front end even more monolithic. A matte badge on the hood continues that sophisticated aura.

The monolithic design continues with hidden door handles for a cleaner exterior look and a rear with elegant lines that create a boat-tail-like visual effect. Similar to the front, the rear-view camera, trunk lid unlocking function, and camera washer nozzle are all integrated out of sight to keep the surface bold and elegant. The slim, elongated rear lights extend far into the rear to balance out the broadness of the back view.

Lighting is a big part of the Neue Klasse design. When the vehicle is started or the lights are switched on, LED units backlight the crystal headlights, creating an elegant light signature that complements the illuminated kidney grille. When you approach the car, a choreographed light carpet effect will welcome you. The same animation will go off when you leave the vehicle.

Neue Klasse interior design: could lull you to sleep

The Neue Klasse design continues into the interior. An immersive light experience can be tailored to your preferences, offering an array of light elements with a wraparound effect for maximum ambiance. One of the highlights is the ambient light strip that runs the full length of the cockpit, providing a delicate alabaster structure during the day and dynamic lighting in the evening, with color and brightness that respond to the time of day. In addition to the customizable lighting is the Panoramic Skylounge LED roof, which is made up of 40 LED lights to emulate the quilting pattern of the seats.

The interior has a design that matches this sophisticated lighting, featuring a Panoramic iDrive display and a “floating” Central Display. This carries over to the passenger seating with the debut of the Passenger Screen. Then there’s the Theater Screen, a 31.3-inch touchscreen with 8K resolution, paired with an optional surround system that turns the sedan’s rear compartment into an impromptu drive-in movie theater. You can also use the integrated camera to make Zoom video calls as if you’re in a mobile office. Like everything else in the 7 Series, taking out the theater screen is a production, including an accompanying sound animation, dimmed lighting, and sunshades for the windows.

To make the interior even more luxurious — maybe even more so than your actual living room — the seating comes with electric adjustment, heating, lumbar support, and a massage function with three levels of intensity. This is included in the front seats and can be added to passenger seats. This focus on comfort is evident in the uncluttered instrument panel and a new control panel that puts all interior functions at your fingertips. Attention to detail includes illuminated cup holders and magnetic holders to keep phones securely in place. The entire interior can be customized to your taste, including the steering wheel design and seat upholstery colors.

The BMW 7 Series has more tech and assistance than you probably need

Neue Klasse introduces a “software-defined vehicle,” meaning a more intelligent, efficient, and capable vehicle. The aforementioned Panoramic iDrive system comes with the BMW Operating System X, which serves as the intelligent platform for displays and operating systems. The interface appearance can be customized, including content, widgets, and displays. You can select colors, display schemes, and background images, including your own. There is also more in-car entertainment options “than ever before,” including a wide range of games.

BMW also has an intelligent personal assistant, powered by Amazon’s Alexa+ AI technology. This assistant can help you navigate and control various media and features within the vehicle. The self-learning assistant can be summoned by saying “Hey BMW” or pushing a button on the steering wheel, offering a more conversational interaction. Linking to an Amazon account can add streaming music search, access to the latest news, and more.

BMW Symbiotic Drive is a Level 2 driver assistance system to ensure you are driving safely. You’ll always have full control, allowing you to accelerate, steer, and brake as needed without the assistance system being deactivated. Safety features include the Lane Keeping Assistant with active lane return, automatic evasion maneuvers within the car’s own lane, Active Blind Spot Detection, and Side Collision Protection when there is a risk of a lateral collision, plus Cross Traffic Warning Front with Brake Intervention when turning into a road or exiting a parking space. You can add on the Parking Assistant Plus package for semi-automated parking. This means your car can detect parking spaces and perform automated parking maneuvers more smoothly and swiftly.

The BMW Digital Key Plus is another technology-based upgrade that lets you set up your smartphone or smartwatch as a vehicle key. This is another way that the 7 Series uses advanced technology to create a more immersive, comfortable, and convenient experience. The ambient lighting, movie theater, and massage seats, along with the simplified, bolder exterior, put the Neue Klasse design on full display. While elegant and luxurious, it sounds maybe a bit too comfortable to me. It sounds like you just need a blanket and you’d fall instantly asleep amongst all of the screens, lights, and sounds.
