There’s something exciting about a car that’s not advertised for its performance, yet can smoke all the cars that are marketed for their power and speed. One sleeper car that the internet has been starting to recognize? The Volvo S60.

Volvo isn’t the name I’d think of when I hear “sleeper car.” Their vehicles aren’t exactly sexy or exciting. It’s basically all SUVs and wagons, designed to look unassuming and safe. However, the Volvo S60 Recharge is hiding some heat underneath its unassuming appearance.

The Volvo S60 Recharge was a sedan that was discontinued in the United States in 2024. It’s handsome, but doesn’t look aggressive. But this car can actually smoke most sports cars. With a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and a rear electric motor, this hybrid delivers 455 horsepower and 523 lb-ft of torque, reaching 60 miles per hour in 4.3 seconds. The Recharge can complete a quarter mile in 12.5 seconds at 112 mph.

Here are some of the coolest sleeper cars that can also smoke the classic drag cars in a quarter mile race.

Best sleeper cars to buy in 2026

The Volvo S60 Recharge is no longer available in the United States. But there are other sleeper cars you can get right here in America in 2026.

Lucid Air Sapphire

My boyfriend always says if he were forced to get an EV, he’d get the Lucid Air Sapphire. However, most non-car guys would probably not look at this thing. It’s beautiful and luxurious, yes, but it just looks like a massive electric vehicle with Tesla-inspired blankness. Nothing too stand out.

However, this 5,335-pound beast has 1,234 horsepower and can hit 60 mph in 2.2 seconds. I personally wouldn’t count it as a “sleeper” since most EVs can do insane pulls, but it’s still very impressive for a luxury vehicle. It also has a lot of great performance features, like stiff springs and dampers, anti-roll bars, and an advanced torque vectoring system. So this thing could even take some crazy corners.

Audi S8

This luxurious-looking sedan looks a bit like a dad car, but it has a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 with 563 horsepower. Paired with its all-wheel drive and predictive air suspension system make it a lot more capable than even some vehicles advertised as sports cars.

You’re looking at a 3.7-second pull to reach 60 mph and a 12.2-second quarter-mile time. Not too bad for a vehicle that’s well over 5,100 pounds. The Lotus CEO would be quite shocked.

Mercedes-Benz E450

This vehicle looks elegant and clean. Not exactly like something you’d put on a drag strip. However, this luxury sedan can move.

It has a turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine and a permanent-magnet electric motor for a combined 375 horsepower. And tons of tech. Maybe too much tech. But all of this helps it achieve 0-60 in 4.7 seconds.

Volkswagen ID.Buzz

Okay, the Buzz probably can’t beat most sleeper cars, but this is a sleeper van, so it’s worth mentioning. Going 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds while inside this groovy camper is pretty funny. What a fun experience that would be.

The Buzz is returning in 2027 with a bed. But we don’t know much about its performance. Will it be even faster? That’d be amazing. Of course, the range will be the actual deal breaker for the Buzz’s survival in the U.S.

Ford F-150 Raptor R

You expect the Ford F-150 Raptor R to be a beast on the trails. Its not like you’d think it’s slow. But I guess I wouldn’t look at the Raptor and assume it would beat me at a green light.

However, the Ford F-150 Raptor R is ready to race. The standard Raptor can sprint up to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds, which is already impressive for a nearly 6,000-pound vehicle. But the supercharged V8 Raptor R can reach 60 mph in 3.6 seconds.
