A camouflaged prototype of the upcoming Mercedes-AMG electric C-Class

We just caught Mercedes-AMG testing a secret electric sedan — it has up to 800 hp, 800-volt charging, and it looks nothing like a typical EV

EVs are in a bit of a weird spot at the moment. Some manufacturers seem to think they’ve pushed a bit too hard with the format and are pulling a bit of a u-turn, while others still see the future as firmly electric. Mercedes-AMG seems to be in the latter camp, and despite some previous EV struggles, seems to be pushing ahead with plans for its high-performance all-electric C-Class.

We managed to get our hands on a selection of Spy Shots featuring the all electric Mercedes-AMG C, and it seems like EV enthusiasts have a lot to look forward to.

Despite the camouflage, Mercedes’ distinctive star-shaped headlights are easy enough to make out, shining brightly despite the daylight. They stand out against what is a very flat, broad, and plain front to the vehicle.

That front fits in with the rest of the electric C-class, which seems to have a powerful, muscular, feel to it. Mercedes has decided to ditch the oddly rounded, futuristic, look many EV manufacturers opt for in favor of something a bit boxier.

Looking at the vehicle from the front, it’s not what you would call sleek, and represents a major departure from something like the Mercedes-AMG C63. It screams more “raw power” than “sporty.” From the side, there’s a notable fastback-shape to the silhouette, which adds that touch of sleekness, improves aerodynamics, and plays into the muscle car vibes the prototype is giving off.

The vehicle also seems to feature a pop-up spoiler, which is visible in some images and tucked away in others. We don’t know what speed the spoiler deploys at, but Mercedes obviously believes the EV’s immense weight and the battery-pack’s arrangement isn’t enough to force those back wheels into the ground when you’re going all-out.

What do we know about the all electric Mercedes-AMG C

Not a lot is known about the Mercedes-AMG C EV, beyond some vague specs and release dates. Speculation is still pretty rife about the whole thing, and it is possible to make a few educated guesses in regards to it.

We do know an electric C-class of some kind will be out this year. Whether that includes the performance-focused AMG variant is anyone’s guess. There’s every chance that the Mercedes-AMG version rolls out several months after the base electric C-Class makes its debut.

The vehicle is likely to use the company’s mid-size MB.EA platform, instead of the EVA2 architecture. This means customers will have access to ultra-fast 800-volt charging. That’s the one where you can get a vehicle from 10% to 80% in less than 20 minutes in some cases. It may also share a 94.5 kWh battery with the standard electric C-Class, though some of the proposed 497 mile range the base model will carry may be sacrificed for the additional performance you would expect from an AMG.

Horsepower estimates have ranged from 600 to 800, but in truth it’s anyone’s guess. With many EVs pushing horsepower into four-figures the sky really is the limit. Mercedes is also likely to adopt a dual-motor setup for its performance electric sedan. Which increases power consumption and control, as well as adding AWD by default, but will sap those batteries a lot faster.

This isn’t the only prototype Mercedes we’ve spotted recently. The upcoming “Baby G” prototype was also snapped while out and about somewhere in Europe.

My time as an automotive journalist has put me behind the wheel of some of the world's fastest cars, flown me around the world to see the covers come off a variety of modern classics, and seen me spend a worrying amount of time hunched over a laptop in a darkened living room. Thanks COVID! I have bylines in a variety of publications, including Digital Trends, Autoblog, The Manual, SlashGear, The Gentleman Racer, Guessing Headlights, with my work also being syndicated to the likes of MSN and Yahoo Life. Autonoción US has promised me the opportunity to let loose creatively, and produce pieces I'm genuinely proud to put my name to. How could I turn that down? I hope some of it entertains you, informs you, or at least helps kill a few minutes while you're waiting for a train.
