From 3,300 to 33,000 vehicles: General Motors has paused Corvette C8 sales over an issue that’s a lot bigger than expected

General Motors was previously pretty quiet about a tiny little issue with its newest Corvette C8 sports cars, but it’s now looking like it’s a lot bigger problem than previously believed.

Last week, GM paused sales of the Corvette C8 due to a rear turn signal issue that didn’t really seem all that big of a deal. Most people wouldn’t even notice it, promise! Well, actually, that’s the issue. Most people don’t notice when their rear light is out while driving — so this outage detection system is meant to let you know when that happens. If you had one of the Corvettes impacted by this issue, you’d have no idea the light was not working — and others would have no idea you were turning. This could possibly lead to collisions, which is why GM had to take action.

However, it was initially believed to be just 2,886 C8’s from the 2026 model year and 438 from 2025. That’s just about 3,300 total. In response, GM told dealers to pause delivery of these vehicles until the issue was fixed. An investigation found that the issue stems from a software update in October 2024. The fix? A software update for the lighting control module. This can be delivered over the air to some 2026 models. The rest will have to head to a local dealership for a quick update. But at least it’s just a few thousand, right?

Considering the Chevrolet Corvette?

Not anymore. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued an official recall announcement indicating that 32,988 Corvettes may be affected. This includes basically every Corvette from 2025 and 2026, including the Stingray, E-Ray, and ZR1X, in both coupe and convertible form.

Is the Corvette C8 unreliable?

It seems like the newest generation Corvette is always in the news lately for some kind of issue. There’s the rear light issue impacting basically every new Corvette from 2025 and 2026, but this wasn’t the first recall. General Motors issued a recall in 2025 after certain Z06 and ZR1 models were found to pose a fire risk. A cooling fan under the fuel filler could waft fuel into the wrong place, potentially causing it to interact with hot parts of the car that are meant to be cooled.

However, I wouldn’t say the Corvette C8 is unreliable — there are a lot of growing pains when big changes are made to vehicles in the next generation. This is the first year that the Corvette became mid-engine, and there is also a lot of new software in the C8 compared to previous generations. These things need to be ironed out over time, and Consumer Reports even noticed that the C8 became more reliable as the years went on. Since 2021, Consumer Reports’ testing has shown a lot more reliability in its powertrain, suspension, and electronics.

A complex and high-performing sports car like the C8 — which can almost rival a supercar — is going to have more complexity than, say, a Toyota Corolla. Toyota is often at the top of the reliability charts due to the stability of its vehicles. That’s because these models often don’t change drastically from generation to generation. Toyota is known to make very small changes as it tests new technology before implementing it in its safe commuters. The result? Yeah, the Corolla is more boring than the Corvette C8, but you will run into fewer issues.

On the other end of the recall scale, you have Ford. This popular automaker announces a recall every few weeks, but it doesn’t actually mean its vehicles are super unreliable. In fact, the auto industry is starting to realize that Ford is actually just playing it very safe, hoping to catch every issue it can. Meanwhile, it seems like Corvettes have about two recalls per year. It’s fun to sensationalize things, and it’s smart to question things. But the Corvette C8 is generally pretty reliable.

Still, get your outage detection system checked. If you aren’t sure if your Corvette is included in this latest recall, check the NHTSA website. Just have your VIN ready.
