Chevy just changed the rules for the Silverado ZR2 — factory 35-inch tires, quad exhaust, and the timing is the headline

While many automakers are going smaller, Chevy is changing the rules and going massive. The heavily camouflaged 2027 Chevrolet Silverado lineup looks like a pickup truck enthusiast’s dream, but can it compete with the more cost-effective pickups flooding the market?

After China revealed Chery’s insanely cheap EV pickup truck, America got a little jealous. As automakers in the United States keep dumping affordable, compact vehicles in favor of hulking SUVs and trucks, many buyers have been priced out of the new-car market entirely. Ford saw an opportunity to announce a new lineup of all-electric vehicles under $40,000, including a truck it claims will be $30,000. But it seems like Chevy is not going to bother trying. The Silverado that’s been spotted is actually even larger than previous generations, and it’s sticking to gas.

The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 and Trail Boss are going for tough exterior and powerful engine

Compared to other camo vehicles we’ve spotted recently, Chevy seems to have actually attempted to hide the Silverado ZR2. GM-Trucks even spotted an earlier camo truck in 2025 that appeared to be wrapped in a black trash bag. The more recently spied on version is a bit easier to see, so we have a good amount of information on this pickup.

The 2027 Silverado ZR2 is even taller than previous models, partially due to its tires. One prototype was spotted with Goodyear Territory MT tires sized at 285/75 R18, or about 35 inches in diameter. The 2026 ZR2 was on 33-inch tires. The bigger tires and taller ground clearance mean this future ZR2 could more closely compete with the Ford Raptor and Ram 1500 RHO, able to tackle some challenging off-roading. However, it doesn’t look to be getting any wider, which still could place it behind its competitors when it comes to high-speed off-roading. The 2027 Chevy Silverado ZR2 may be more focused on challenging off-road trails.

Other components of the upcoming ZR2 support this new rough-and-tumble vehicle: a high-clearance front bumper and Multimatic DSSV shocks. The grille stood out in more recent spy footage of the Silverado, though this footage appears to show the Trail Boss rather than the ZR2. This Silverado model also seems to have improved front-end clearance and a more rugged, aggressive styling.

Both the ZR2 and Trail Boss will be powered by a V8, setting it apart from other upcoming pickups. In 2025, GM announced it was investing $888 million in its Tonawanda engine plant in New York to continue supporting its six-generation small-block V8. This is a more efficient engine that still produces the power you’d expect from a Silverado. In the press release, GM stated that this engine would be part of its 2027 lineup.

This coincides with the Silverado’s new quad-tip exhaust setup, which appears to be inspired by the C8 Corvette, down to the superellipse-shaped tips.

Will the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado lineup be competitive?

The styling of the 2027 Silverado seems to be hinting at more aggression, more power, and more off-road capability. It’s expected to arrive in late 2026 or early 2027, but it’s tough to say if it will be a welcome change or face scrutiny.

One thing that could help is its pricing. The official MSRP is unknown, but it’s expected to be around $40,000 for the base trim. The Trail Boss may start around $50,000, and the ZR2 could be in the mid-$70,000 to $80,000 range. Meanwhile, the 2027 Ram 1500 RHO is expected to cost $70,000, and the Ford Raptor is expected to cost over $100,000.

The Silverado is a better deal than the Raptor, but they are not direct competitors. The Raptor is more focused on high-speed desert running thanks to its wider stance, while the ZR2 seems to be for tackling tricky trails. Still, the insane pricing difference could have people who just want a big, tough truck going for the ZR2 instead.

Meanwhile, the Silverado ZR2 and the 1500 RHO are pretty direct competitors. Based on the 2026 models, the 1500 RHO is more powerful and faster off-road than the ZR2, although this could change in 2027. Based on what we’re seeing, however, I think the 2027 Ram 1500 RHO edges out the ZR2 and will cost way less. The Trail Boss could be a cheaper alternative to both, but it still won’t have the off-roading performance to match the RHO.

Still, it does have a great-sounding V8, which counts for something.
