I think we’re not talking about the 2026 Jeep Cherokee enough. It’s not going to be among the year’s biggest talking points, so it’s often overlooked despite being one of the most exciting hybrid SUVs of 2026.
Car enthusiasts are craving excitement, passion, emotion, zeal. Just anything that makes them feel something behind the wheel. Most new vehicles are valued for being cheap, electric, safe, and reliable. It’s not like these are bad things. Most people can’t even afford a new car these days, so cheap is a huge talking point. But when we are discussing these sensible and bland talking points, it’s not like you’d hear people say, “Wait, what about the Jeep Cherokee? That thing has a 3.5 out of 5 reliability from RepairPal!”
However, if we stop yapping about crash test ratings and good deals for just a few seconds, we could be talking about the Jeep Cherokee.
The 2026 Jeep Cherokee has fresh, fun looks
The 2026 Jeep Cherokee marks its return after it was discontinued in 2023 (again). Nobody was really that sad when the Cherokee disappeared once more, since the KJ model was not seen as an improvement from the previous XJ model. Wrote Autopain back in 2023: “The biggest controversy about the KJ when it debuted was its styling; it looks happy and dorky, not chiseled and tough like its forebear. While I personally have come around to the KJ’s looks — particularly in the rear since I love rear-mounted tire carriers — the biggest issues I have with the KJ are mechanical. Its powertrain, drivetrain, and suspension are vastly inferior to those of the XJ.”
However, the 2026 Jeep Cherokee has revived a bit of old-school style to the model. The boxy look is more cheeky and fun than the KJ, and the back has a more edgy styling than the usual SUV fare. The whole thing flows and has a bit more oomph than its competitors in terms of looks. Like alright, Consumer Reviews shows that its reliability is mixed, but you’ll be smiling and your vehicle will look fresh and distinct when you break down. You cannot look me in the eye and tell me that the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V has even a drop of personality in their design.
Performance > Reliability
The hybrid system is another selling point of the 2026 Jeep Cherokee. It has a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder turbo and an eCVT that produces 210 horsepower and 230 lb.-ft of torque. It’s not anything astounding (although the competition is around the same), but it’s enough to have fun while you’re driving. I’ve always stood by my argument that a vehicle’s 0-60 stat is hardly important these days. Instead, I care that the 2026 Jeep Cherokee has been described as having an immediate response, making it feel quick and zippy. The steering wheel is accurate, making the Cherokee feel quite spirited on twisty roads, despite its size.
But more importantly — it’s a Jeep we’re talking about, after all — is its capability. With an 8-inch ground clearance, four-wheel drive, and a fun Selec-Terrain traction management system, this is an SUV that can handle moderate off-roading with ease. The Drive wrote: “I got to experience the Cherokee in a way I wouldn’t have otherwise. As a real owner might, I drove it through some straight-up nasty conditions where streams crossed the road and fist-sized rocks pockmarked both lanes. I have to say that the Cherokee did great with all that, throwing big wakes when no other cars were nearby and clearing stones that might have torn up the underside of a lower-riding crossover. I was happy to be in the Jeep during all of that.”
The 2026 Jeep Cherokee can go the distance
But the powertrain is not only good for powering through rocky roads. In fact, it’s the hybrid powertrain mentioned above that made it possible to bring the Cherokee back. Jeep Design Lead Bill Zheng explained that fuel mileage was one of the biggest focuses when it came the Cherokee’s design: crappy mileage was the “number one reason” most buyers claimed they didn’t consider the KJ. It apparently wasn’t how ugly it was after all.
The 2026 Jeep Cherokee has an engine designed for efficiency, allowing it to get 39 miles per gallon in the city and 35 on the highway. This is 37 MPG combined. It also offers a driving range of more than 500 miles. This is a massive improvement over the 2023 model, which had a combined MPG of about 23. The 2.4L engine got 21 MPG in the city and 29 on the highway, while the 2.0L turbo engine got 20 in the city and 26 on the highway. You can see why that was just as offensive as its butt-ugly exterior.
Sure, the 2026 Jeep Cherokee may not be the cheapest or most practical of the hybrid SUVs you can choose from, but it has great mileage — and you’ll be enjoying every single one of them. I just think it should be popping up in more conversations. I’m sick of hearing about your CR-V.
