Apparently rich people don’t want electric supercars, according to Lamborghini, and I can finally relate to them.
The Italian supercar icon has been planning to make all-electric cars for quite some time, with Lamborghini announcing the Direzione Cor Tauri strategy towards “decarbonization and electrification” around 2021. This led to the reveal of its first all-electric concept car in 2023. The Lanzador was unveiled at Monterey Car Week with plans to debut in 2028.
To make the Lanzador stand out amongst the hordes of electric vehicles infiltrating the market, the model featured “uncompromising charisma and sportiness” based on the Gran Turismo 2+2 concept. Said Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini’s CEO: “With this concept, we are ushering in a new car segment, the Ultra GT, which is poised to offer customers a new and unparalleled driving experience, one that’s quintessentially Lamborghini, thanks to groundbreaking technologies.”
On top of the Lanzador’s unsurprisingly luxurious interior and aggressive exterior, it had two electric motors and all-wheel drive, generating 1 megawatt of power — or around 1,360 horsepower. All in all, it seemed pretty promising if you wanted a super expensive electric supercar. Which apparently nobody wants.
At this point, the Lanzador is no longer part of Lamborghini’s vision, as it appears rich people were not particularly excited about it despite its looks and power.
The rich people don’t want the Lanzador and neither does anyone else

Over the weekend, Winkelmann didn’t sound as enthusiastic about the Lanzador as he did back in 2023. He told Sunday Times that developing all-electric supercars like the Lanzador has become an “expensive hobby” rather than a promising endeavor or financial solution. Why? Apparently, the desire for battery-powered cars amongst the wealthy Lamborghini crowd had become “close to zero.”
Rich people were not finding an “emotional connection” with EVs, largely due to the iconic noise from Lamborghini’s combustion engine-powered vehicles. I never thought I’d say this, but I can really relate to whatever these multi-millionaires are feeling. It just goes to show that no matter how much money you have, you don’t want to spend it on an EV. Or however the saying goes.
While I’m sort of joking (I live in Los Angeles and see plenty of Teslas — even Cybertrucks), I do think that the Lamborghini enthusiast crowd is likely not the most enthusiastic electric car support group. Lamborghini is known for its completely immersive experience, which includes the sounds of its high-revving V10 and V12 engines. When your supercars are known for being loud, an electric car doesn’t seem like the best pivot. Stripping the spirit from a $300K supercar and then slapping even higher price tag on it…
The long-time Lanzador planning has now come to an end. Instead, Lamborghini is switching to a plug-in hybrid. In fact, the brand will only have plug-in hybrids by 2030. Until then, expect more ICE cars “as long as possible.”
This makes sense after hearing that Lamborghini reported records sales in 2025 thanks to its hybrid supercar, the Revuelto, and hybrid SUV, the Urus. Lamborghini also introduced the hybrid Temerario last year. Despite being hundreds of thousands of dollars, these hybrid cars have apparently been a huge hit.
Winkelmann said: “Plug-in hybrids offer the best of both worlds, combining the agility and low-rev boost of electric battery technology with the emotion and power output of an internal combustion engine.”
I mean, I guess a little bit of environmental awareness doesn’t hurt as you’re roaring down the track or racing to work, right?
