A few months ago, the official X account encouraged blind drivers and elderly drivers to use Full Self-Driving mode, sharing stories of people who claimed they would otherwise not be allowed on the road without it. Now, Tesla has shared the story of a man born without arms.

The X post, which appeared on Tesla’s account, was written by a man going by John F. He said he was born without arms and has been driving with his feet since he got his license. He said: “I’m a fully licensed driver, and traditionally I drove with my left foot on the steering wheel and my right foot handling the gas and brake. My only legal restrictions are automatic transmission and power steering.”

It would seem like an inspiring story. However, John F. added that his birth defects have led to severe arthritis in his hips. He explained that his new Model Y with Full Self-Driving mode has been a “game-changer” for him, reducing the physical pressure and fatigue of driving. He added that FSD gave him his freedom back. The same story of the man with failing eyesight who was sold a Cybertruck. And the elderly lady who was encouraged to use FSD since she’s too frail and slow to drive.

Why is Tesla allowed to keep selling lies and making dangerous claims?

Let’s be real for a second here. Elon Musk promised autonomous driving over 10 years ago. However, Full Self-Driving mode has been nowhere near that. While it’s considered a Level 2 system capability-wise, Musk has continued to claim it’s capable of a lot more than that. This is very dangerous, as Tesla fanboys are willing to listen to everything Musk says — and blindly believe it. This means there are tons of people on the road who believe FSD can drive for them, even in scary situations.

Due to Musk’s ongoing lies, there have been ongoing investigations into FSD for not working as intended, lawsuits from drivers who bought a Tesla believing they’d get autonomous driving, and even deaths. Musk had to finally admit that the current vehicles had no chance of becoming autonomous, even with ongoing updates. Of course, this was followed by a claim that he’d give these suckers a discount on a new vehicle that still doesn’t have autonomous driving capabilities. Even then, Tesla fans seemed very happy to learn they had been lied to for a decade.

I don’t get it!

But at this point, we know that Full Self-Driving mode is nowhere near autonomous. A Level 2 system requires complete supervision, and you must be ready to take over at any moment. This situation with John F. is complex. It’s ableist to say that a man with no arms can’t take over in a split second. And I agree.

However, he has admitted to having severe arthritis and fatigue. This is what stops most elderly people from driving, leading to slower reaction times and deadly accidents. To claim that John F. and others with extreme arthritis and slow reaction times should rely on FSD is dangerous.

Of course, the X responses found the story wholesome: “This is why my next car is a Tesla with FSD. When my AMD starts to be a problem, I can still look forward to remaining independent.” Another added: “And that is why I respect Elon Musk so much.”

Horrifying.

I think John F. should be allowed to drive as a legal driver, but only if he is able to drive without Full Self-Driving mode. I think Tesla should stop exaggerating its capabilities. It should stop claiming it’s a solution for those who are no longer able to drive without assistance. It leaves you wondering why Tesla isn’t in more legal trouble for lying aand making false claims. While John F. is simply stating that FSD lets him take some breaks from driving, it’s a dangerous sentiment from Tesla after the continued exaggerated claims. It has clearly left people believing that they can rely on Tesla if they lose their ability to drive, if you read the comments.

Well, Musk has continued to claim that his random claims are protected under “free speech.” He even used this defense in court. Not every lawmaker agrees, with a judge in California ruling that Tesla has to stop lying about FSD’s capabilities or stop selling vehicles. The California DMV ruled that Tesla had 60 days to fix its marketing, but that has never really happened. While FSD says “Supervised” in parentheses, Tesla continues to claim that FSD is great for blind and arthritic drivers who can’t react in time. And that it can help you avoid hydroplaning, even though the cameras have been known to get confused in the rain.

I think the answer is clear: Musk is too rich to be contained by the law. At this point, car buyers have to protect themselves. He has admitted FSD doesn’t work as intended, so don’t act like it can take over for you. I’m sick of seeing these disturbing videos on X of Tesla fans pronouncing their love for FSD, showing how it handles insane situations like zipping at 80 miles per hour past a semi-truck as the road narrows. I count these people lucky. But many haven’t been.

Tesla is at it again.
