Leading up to today, domestic automakers have been largely disappointing American buyers. With the United States government denying entry to Chinese EVs, implementing tariffs, and discouraging citizens from buying local EVs, carmakers have been scrambling. Many have pivoted from EVs but are struggling to recoup losses after losing billions last year. We’re getting expensive sports cars, luxury EVs, three-row SUVs, and electric pickups, all largely out of reach for most American buyers.

But I think automakers are finally listening: Americans want small, cheap cars. And Chrysler may be the most exciting one yet.

Chrysler is not worried, and this is probably why

While many automakers struggled in 2025, Chrysler was seeing increased sales. This was largely due to the Chrysler Pacifica, a minivan. In the past, automakers have continued to focus on expensive, large vehicles because of their ongoing sales. However, it’s been a bit of a misconception that Americans want this. The reason small sedans and the like saw a decrease in sales was not a lack of interest: it was due to prices rising beyond what Americans can afford. Meanwhile, rich Americans continued to buy large SUVs, making this look like the top segment.

But the Chrysler Pacifica proved to Chrysler that Americans are not looking for the largest and fanciest SUVs. In fact, they want the opposite.

In 2025, Chrysler announced that a $30,000 vehicle was coming. That was cool, but something a few automakers have promised. However, Detroit News has been told that there’s a Chrysler concept priced in the $20,000’s. It’s being called the Pronto, a name Chrysler has used for past concepts. It will be small and affordable, if it exists.

None of the concepts revealed by Chrysler has been confirmed for production. But there’s a good chance that they’re happening. New CEO Matt McAlear has made it clear that affordable products are part of Chrysler’s future. And it’s something the brand needs to remain competitive. Or, well, become competitive, really. Chrysler has admitted that it lost its way, but affordable cars are the answer.

“Most dealers made their money selling Neons and Sundances, and Acclaims and Spirits. Cars that were affordable,” said Pennsylvania-based dealer Dave Kelleher to Detroit News. “We’ve gotten away from that heritage.”

For now…

“We’ve got a lot of positivity around the brand,” said McAlear. “I don’t think there’s anything to be worried about. It’s some stuff that we’ve already talked with our national dealer council about, and we’re excited to kind of lay that out.”

This will happen on May 21st, during a Stellantis investor gathering. This is when Chrysler will likely reveal its strategy and future lineup. And it’s a strategy that Chrysler seems very confident about, with multiple leaders saying there’s nothing to be worried about at all. Even though all they have right now is a minivan.

If the plan includes the $20,000 car and other affordable options, I think Chrysler has plenty of reasons to be confident. However, it’s not alone. Dodge is considering a sports car under $30,000, but at this rate, Chrysler could beat them there by a long shot.

Wait, is Chrysler going to save America’s automotive market?
