That’s my trusty commuter, and it never lets me down. But that’s the thing. I don’t think I’d ever make any comments about James’ (that’s his name) looks. There’s really nothing to write home about there.

But that could change in 2028. Toyota revealed the Toyota Corolla concept at the Tokyo Auto Show back in 2025. At the time, Toyota confirmed it previews an upcoming production model, likely the next-generation Corolla. The sleek, futuristic design brings the humble, round Corolla into the world of stylish electric vehicles.

What immediately stands out to me are the sharp, angled lines throughout the Corolla’s body panels. It looks very classy, like it’s inspired by BMW’s Neue Klasse models. The front is even crazier, with a striped LED panel running the full width that gets thinner in the center of the nose, as well as a dramatic black lip. This gives the Corolla a very dramatic hammerhead shape that looks out of this world with its pixel-like detailing.

Vehicles getting redesigned is nothing new, but I think it’s very commendable that Toyota is willing to make such a dramatic design pivot for its humble commuter. Even though it’s nowhere near luxury and is expected to be just $30,000, Toyota has stated that people want to drive something that looks cool. I think that means something since they could very well have kept the boring looks from 2020, especially for that cheap. But Toyota wants drivers to feel happy and proud behind the wheel, even if they are just going to work.

What do we know about the 2028 Toyota Corolla? Not much, but who cares

We don’t know much about the 2028 Toyota Corolla. Most of the stuff Toyota showed off at the Tokyo Auto Show was purely aesthetic.

However, Toyota has stated that it wants this vehicle to have a wide range of powertrains, from gas to hybrid to full EV. It probably doesn’t come as a surprise, given the redesign, which looks very… EV. But I can appreciate Toyota giving its more affordable vehicle the luxury EV treatment, allowing regular Americans the opportunity to have that trending EV look without paying $50,000 or more.

Honestly, that’s about all we know. We don’t know how fast it will be, its fuel economy (or range), or any trim levels. Nothing. But do you really need to know anything else? It’s gonna be reliable, comfortable, capable, efficient, and the stats won’t be anything special. But it’ll get the job done. Nobody gets a Corolla for its 0-60.

I think the real story here is that the Corolla is still gonna be the same thing as ever, but with a glorious makeover. A makeover possibly worthy of a luxury brand. That kind of commuter styling is something to be admired.

Of course, we don’t know exactly how the 2028 Corolla will look. It may not be as snazzy as the concept. But I have a feeling the makeover will be a lot cooler than what most $30,000 get.

I’m a Toyota Corolla girlie.
