The ‘Exclusive’ Delivery Event Just Got Canceled

Just buy the car, bro. I think this latest fiasco with Tesla’s Model S and X discontinuation is further proof that the brand gets by on loyalty alone. S&P Global Mobility recently declared Tesla as the brand Americans are most loyal to, and that’s honestly not shocking to hear. Elon Musk has been lying about Tesla products and capabilities for over 10 years and Americans will defend him and his vehicles with their very last breath.

Tires can fall off of Cybertrucks, Full Self-Driving mode can be linked to fiery deaths, and technology and cars can be delayed for a decade. It doesn’t matter. If Elon says it’s happening eventually, the Tesla fans will stay put. And they’ll get mad if you question him. So nobody is surprised by this study. It’s another one of those studies that probably didn’t need to happen and hopefully nobody put money into it.

Anyway, the latest silly thing that Tesla did was sell “Signature Edition” versions of the Model S and X as a way to make more money from these models before they are discontinued. Tesla is pivoting away from building passenger vehicles to focus on its hideous Cybercab and humanoid robots. The Signature Edition of the Model S and X are about $160,000. That’s a $40,000 difference for a paint color.

And Tesla customers are eating it up.

Tesla’s Signature Edition Delivery Event was already silly, but now it’s canceled

Special editions of cars are nothing crazy. It’s more the wacky way Tesla is doing everything.

Last month, Tesla sent its Signature Edition suckers an email for something called a “Signature Edition Delivery Event.” This was scheduled for May 12th, meant to be an invite-only celebration of the Model S and Model X’s last deliveries. “Ever.” There would be food to buy and exclusive merch to buy. And you might be able to take your Signature Edition vehicle home.

I’m speechless, personally.

But Tesla fans ate it up. They were all showing off their invites like they were special (and not just people who bought a car) and saying they wish they’d purchased one so they could go. To… a shop? I think you’ll be okay, dude. This event just further proves that Tesla’s success (if you believe it has any) comes down to these mega-fans feeling the brand and Musk can do no wrong.

Similar to Tesla’s “We, Robot” event that showed no actual Cybercab driving and had robots controlled by humans, this feels like another strange marketing scheme rather than offering customers something that matters. Like Full Self-Driving mode that works as promised. It feels like a celebration of those that are fine without Tesla delivering anything, like a Tupperware party. It’s creating an event specifically to make Tesla fanboys feel special rather than offering Cybercabs that can actually drive autonomously. I am not sure why this kinda stuff works, but I guess you can look at any cult or religion and see it in action.

Well, in pure Tesla fashion, Musk canceled the Signature Edition Delivery Event. The cancellation email was shared on X, with one guy claiming he spent thousands on a flight and hotel getting ready to go to this bizarre meetup. The event is being “postponed,” but we all know how that goes in Tesla’s world. We’re still waiting a decade for the second-generation Roadster and autonomous FSD. I think you can assume it’s never happening.

Either way, even the biggest Tesla fans admitted they were not going to attend the next one. They already took off work (weird) to attend this one. Too much effort to keep changing flights and vacation time.

Some blamed Tesla: “This is the most Tesla thing ever. Fitting for the send off. A delay that screws over the people who spent $150k.”

Others blamed the Tesla fans: “Don’t people buy travel insurance knowing that Tesla has done this before? What happened if you have another emergency?”

Either way, this whole saga was an eye-roller for me. Another display of loyalty rather than offering something meaningful. Hopefully those Signature Edition guys get to buy their exclusive merch eventually.

Just buy the car, bro.
