Why? America won’t be getting any of them anyway, and it sucks. However, Ford could be trying to change that, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Apparently, Ford and Geely have been discussing bringing their European tie-up to America, with Geely’s technology coming stateside. These discussions have been going on for a year, but recently stalled. It wouldn’t be all that shocking, since Ford is currently partnered with them over in Spain and also has a partnership with Chinese battery firm CATL. However, Ford recently said that letting Chinese automakers into the United States would be “devastating.”

Now, Ford is denying there were any talks with Geely about bringing Chinese car technology to the United States. But I’m skeptical.

Ford denies talks of bringing Geely tech to the United States, a real bummer

Earlier on Friday, April 24th, The Wall Street Journal’s article started to go a bit viral, and everyone started talking about it. This would be pretty big news: China’s EVs are far cheaper than those in America, and the technology is rapidly improving.

However, a Ford spokesperson told Bloomberg News soon after that the talks never took place.

Well, so much for that. Supposedly.

It’s tough to truly know where Ford stands on the matter. While CEO Jim Farley recently said that letting Chinese automakers into America would be “devastating,” I’d keep in mind that he said this to Fox News, likely pandering to their political views. Because days later, Farley said that the United States should “figure out” a policy for eventually granting Chinese automakers access to the U.S. market.

“Having a plan before we go fast, either on local production or on imports into the U.S. from China, is the most important moment,” Farley said. “We’re in that moment right now.”

I feel like I’m being gaslit right now.

Ford often talks about “American innovation,” but Farley does seem pretty inspired by Chinese automakers. He has been working on a line of under-$40,000 electric vehicles that seem inspired by the production processes and cost-effectiveness of the brands over there. He even recently pointed to BYD as the real competition, noting that Tesla is not updating its models enough to keep up with China’s fast-paced production and innovation.

I’m no Gossip Girl, but I do get this feeling that Farley is secretly having an affair with the automakers in China and is sloppily hiding it from the United States. But we’re onto them. And I personally think they’d be a cute couple. America is currently pushing away EVs in general, not just Chinese ones, and this is going to isolate the United States from the rest of the world as it advances further into the electric vehicle space.

We need to bridge that gap or we’ll be left behind. The technology Ford allegedly wanted to bring into America was Geely’s autonomous driving. This is something we desperately need, given that our automakers are quite behind on it. Tesla is Exhibit A for that. So now the whole world will be cruising in their very own personal $20,000 Waymo, and we’ll be crashing in the rain with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving mode. Great, ug.

Can Ford be the one to protect America from falling even further behind? Farley already has multiple partnerships with Chinese companies and has proposed letting partnered Chinese automakers into the United States to President Donald Trump before. But as it stands now, Ford seems to be going back and forth and back and forth with its public stance on Chinese automakers, and it’s giving me a headache keeping up.

Another day, another confusing turn of events in Ford’s continued back-and-forth about Chinese EVs coming to the United States.
