It feels like there is a new one every single day, so why even get excited? The record will just be broken tomorrow anyway.

The most recent record goes to Lynk & Co’s 10+ electric sedan, which can charge from 10 to 70% in 4 minutes 22 seconds and 10 to 80% in 5 minutes and 32 seconds. This is thanks to its high-voltage 900-volt Shield Gold Brick battery pack, which can charge at over 1.1 megawatts. Charging to 97% takes just 8 minutes and 42 seconds.

And… I don’t care.

There’s an EV that can charge in 5 minutes now, and maybe one that will charge in 4 minutes tomorrow

BYD was apparently the first automaker to produce a car that could charge at over 1 megawatt, giving drivers 250 miles of range in just 5 minutes. But the race has been on, especially over in China. Automakers and battery companies have been competing to see who can charge an EV the fastest.

It’s an endeavor that seemed to make sense at first. I mean, a lot of mainstream EVs still take 30 minutes to charge. I am quite impatient and would rather pay to fill up a tank than sit at some Tesla charging station for 30 minutes during a road trip. Plus, then I’d get to keep my gas-powered cars. Win-win. Anyway, attempting to reduce charging time made sense for a bit. Maybe they could win over impatient weirdos like me if they could get their EV to charge in 10 to 15 minutes.

But… Now we’re just getting crazy. Was it really so bad to charge your EV for 8 minutes? Did you really have to rush to create a battery that could do it in 6 minutes? Five minutes? Four minutes? What are we doing here? This all just feels performative now, like we are just trying to break some Guinness World Record for the fun of it. To prove we can. Like, good job, China. You definitely made charging very, very fast.

Geely’s Lynk & Co. 10+ battery has a capacity of 100 kilowatt-hours, a CLTC range of 507 miles, and a tested range of 494 miles. And it has 912 horsepower and a top speed of 149 miles per hour. But I just feel like I’m spitting out numbers. Like yes, long range. Yes, very fast. Much horsepower.

But this is how I’ve felt about EVs for a while now. I just don’t think all these numbers are very exciting. We have soccer mom SUVs hitting 60 miles per hour in 1.9 seconds. It’s taken all of the fun out of this statistic. If all these ugly family EVs can do it thanks to their electric motors, what does it even matter anymore? It’s not like it proves anything at this point. And do we really need 800-plus mile range? The average range for a gas-powered SUV is, what, like 350 miles? If we’re just trying to win over gearheads, do we really need to keep pushing EVs to go 700 miles, 800 miles… What is the end goal here?

These numbers do not excite me. I don’t want to go 1.9 seconds in a car that looks like I gave up on fun. I don’t want to drive 800 miles in a car that feels soulless, with no steering feel or engine rumble. I think we could have stopped at a bunch of reasonable numbers and spent all this time and technology attempting to make EVs fun and enjoyable, with personalities. I don’t care how many screens you fit in there or how many self-driving modes are installed. We are taking everything way too far just to be better than the other vehicle that’s taking it too far. Meanwhile, all these EVs leave drivers numb.

So anyway, the Lynk & Co. 10+ can charge in 5 minutes. Now you can get on the road in your boring Lucid rip-off even faster. Congratulations!

Am I the only one that is sorta not really all that impressed anymore with electric vehicle records?
