Buzz is not dead after all, but I think it will be if VW doesn’t make some big changes for 2027.

The Volkswagen ID. Buzz was one of my favorite electric vehicles when it debuted in the fall of 2024. Inspired by retro VW vans, the Buzz had a quirky look that finally added some personality to the EV SUV segment. The fun color choices and unique storage options really felt like it was ready for a Venice Beach hangout, whether it was the ’60s or 2024. Unfortunately, it was priced a lot higher than other vehicles in its segment — while offering way worse range.

While the Buzz looked ready for a weekend getaway, it was sure to give the entire family range anxiety.

It seemed like the high price and low range formula killed the Buzz. Volkswagen announced it would not return in 2026, breaking hearts everywhere. I mean, at least mine. However, Volkswagen Group of America CEO Kjell Gruner has just told InsideEV that we got it all wrong. The Volkswagen ID. Buzz isn’t dead. And apparently, everyone wants it.

“We just skipped the model year ‘26 with the ID. Buzz. We just go directly from ‘25 to ‘27,” he said. “We just looked at demand, supply, and then said, ‘Is it worth it to launch model year ‘26?’ Also, in terms of complexity reduction, we just said, we skip that part and go directly [to 2027].”

It sorta makes no sense, since the sentence before that, Gruner claimed that there has been a “consistent offer” in the market. If everyone wants it so much, why would it not be worth launching it in 2026? Is it because VW needed a year to change the Buzz’s formula? Apparently not, because Gruner went on to say they weren’t really looking to introduce new variants in certain markets.

The Volkswagen ID. Buzz needs to adapt to survive in the U.S.

The Volkswagen ID. Buzz needs a new play in the United States, whether Gruner admits it or not. While the Buzz saw strong sales in 2025, reaching 60,700 units (a 102% increase from 2024), only 7,300 of those sales were in America. The United States was not embracing the Buzz.

And this is because of the way the Volkswagen ID. Buzz was presented. While it looked like a quirky, goofy guy, it was just an overpriced SUV with good styling. It had a starting price of $60,000 but offered only 190 real-world miles. Americans cannot afford new cars anymore, so most have to settle for a Chevrolet Equinox EV for $35,000, even though it’s ugly. It’s quite the luxury to pay $30,000 extra for an SUV with worse range just because it’s cute.

One way that the Volkswagen ID. Buzz could find its niche in America by focusing on camping adventurers. The retro VW vans were made for weekend trips. They had benches, sometimes beds. They were the kind of van you’d live in while bumming it at the beach or exploring a national park. Make the Buzz’s interior more camp-friendly and give it some rugged exterior features. It’s not like the Equinox EV could compete with that.

This is what Volkswagen should have done all along.

Gruner did tell InsideEV that he was open to an “adventure-focused” ID. Buzz variant for the United States. They have been having “intro discussions” about a camping-focused Buzz already. Will this be a possibility in 2027 when the Buzz returns? Seems a little bit soon, but I think if the SUV comes back without any changes to its marketing or interior, it will continue to be seen as a luxury most families can’t afford.

I’m begging you, Volkswagen, don’t let the ID. Buzz fail again. I need this thing to exist.

P.S. Maybe increase its range.

The Volkswagen ID.
