Well, maybe it is in America. All the cool cars seem to be skipping the U.S. market.

But the Ford Fathom isn’t meant to be flashy and fun. It’s meant to save you money. And if you want a Fathom for that reason, you’re in luck. The Ford Fathom won’t just save you money at the dealership and gas station; it will save you on your electricity bill.

“In 2027, the all-new Ford Fathom electric truck will be the first EV from a U.S. automaker with an MSRP below $30,000 that does not need a separate wall-mounted inverter to supply over a projected 10 kW of AC power to a home,” Ford stated in a press release.

The Ford Fathom can power your home… At a price

The 2028 Ford Fathom will apparently have a home power setup (optional add-on) that will allow the electric pickup to charge your home with its battery.

This power supply system is expected to be around $2,255. That means you could get a Ford Fathom that powers your home for a total of $32,200. Well, if you can find a dealership selling it for the promised sub-$30,000 starting price Ford keeps promoting.

The Home Power Station will allow for a two-way energy flow between your Fathom and your home. You will just need additional hardware. Oh, and an active subscription plan. So yeah, more than $32,200. We don’t know the subscription cost yet.

Perhaps sensing the car community’s skepticism after hearing all of the additional prices (what is this, an Airbnb listing?), Ford said the Home Backup Power Panel will cost 60% less than the first-gen version on the Ford F-150 Lightning. And it’ll be one of the cheapest vehicles with this capability ever made.

Bidirectional charging is also available on the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt, which starts at $28,995. But the system needed to do this costs an additional $7,000. Tesla’s vehicles also offer home charging, but they cost much more than the Fathom. The F-150 Lightning could be a great alternative, however, since used models are going for a good deal right now.

How much will the Ford Fathom actually be?

The whole appeal of the Ford Fathom is that it’s cheap. That has basically been the entire point this whole time. I mean, would anyone care about a simplified, boxy vehicle otherwise?

But that sub-$30,000 price is starting to look more and more questionable.

The Ford Fathom claims to start at $28,350, but that doesn’t include the $1,595 destination fee. That brings us to $29,945, which is “below $30,000” by like a few bucks. And that’s not counting taxes and any other fees.

However, that’s probably not the final price. On Ford’s official Fathom website, the fine print states that “dealer sets the selling price.” This means that the sub-$30,000 price is just Ford’s suggestion, not a strict number. And Ford dealers are known for marking up vehicles, including the Lightning, which was sometimes sold for $30,000 above MSRP.

Then you have to add random features, like the Home Backup Power Panel and an apparent subscription. At this point, the vehicle could be $40,000 or more. That sorta defeats the purpose of the Ford Fathom, in all honesty.

The Ford Fathom isn’t the most exciting upcoming vehicle.
