But the German manufacturer still knows how to have a bit of fun. The Golf GTI has been a solid example of this since the 1970s. You take a sensible European hatchback, ramp up the power, and add a few more tweaks to take its performance to the next level.

In terms of pedigree, a variant of the Golf GTI currently holds the front-wheel drive record around the Nürburgring Nordschleife. In terms of “fun sporty vehicles” it is to European culture what something like a Ford Mustang is to Americans. Not cheap, but accessible, and something every “car guy” aspires to own in their youth.

But is buying a Golf GTI in the US, in 2026, a good idea?

The Golf GTI is “too modern” in one area

Dave McQuilling/AutoNotion

I’m going to start with an overwhelming negative, because it’s honestly a safety issue. Because of the weather, the relative humidity in the air, and whatever else, I had to deal with windshield fogging on a few occasions while testing the Golf GTI. This isn’t a major problem; you can mitigate it, and the vehicle’s HVAC system can solve it easily, so there’s no need to go too far.

Unless you mess that system up.

While you normally have a windshield demister button right on the dash, or at worst in a prominent place on the center touch screen, such a button is entirely missing from the Golf GTI and indeed many modern Volkswagens. The Golf’s “Clima” button, which takes you straight to the climate control screen, is more than you get on many other vehicles. But it’s not really enough.

Dave McQuilling/AutoNotion

I only noticed the lack of a de-mister button when I was driving down the road and found my windshield fogging up. Here I was left with two choices. Pull over on a dark road with my visibility impaired, or try to de-fog my windscreen while traveling at speed with my visibility impaired. Neither of which is ideal.

I understand why many manufacturers have shifted away from buttons. It can look cleaner, and it does save money. However, certain vital functions (such as a way to clear the windshield and the hazard lights) should always be quickly accessible via a tactile button you can hit from muscle memory.

Buttons aside, the GTI does drive really well

Dave McQuilling/AutoNotion

Anyway, rant over. On to the vehicle itself.

If you regularly read my reviews, you may notice they’re usually centered on some kind of SUV. Hatchbacks are a bit rare in the United States. The 2026 GTI comes with 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, all produced by a turbocharged 4-liter engine and sent through a 7-speed direct-shift gearbox.

While that may not look like an earth-shattering amount of power by modern standards, it’s an awful lot for something the size of a Volkswagen Golf. As a result, acceleration feels sharp and visceral.

Despite lacking AWD, the Golf handles amazingly well too. It’s small and agile with seemingly limitless grip and no hint of understeer even when you’re pushing it about as far as a reasonable person would on public roads.

Many German vehicles seem designed for the Autobahn. They’re in their element cruising along at 80+ miles per hour. Comfortable, economical, and stable at those speeds. Not the Golf GTI, though. It seems engineered to tear down winding back roads and rip apart rally stages. In short, it’s tremendous fun.

Volkswagen has made the best of the Golf GTI’s styling

Dave McQuilling/AutoNotion

In the US right now, the SUV is king. And while sedans and sports cars have both witnessed varying degrees of success, hatchbacks never really took off in a big way. They’re small, not particularly aggressive-looking, and very niche.

So while I challenge anyone to get behind the wheel of a 2026 Golf GTI and somehow not have fun, I do acknowledge it’s a pretty hard sell looks-wise.

Dave McQuilling/AutoNotion

The same may be true with the vehicle’s interior. Styling-wise, the top-end “Autobahn” trim is strikingly futuristic. This may also have been Volkswagen’s best choice. Gold doesn’t carry the same sense of nostalgia and history in the US, so throwing in plaid seats instead of pseudo-racing seats may not really hit.

But blacks, grey, and red contrast stitching is pretty timeless. As are the carbon-fiber-esque trim elements.

The Golf GTI is pretty tech-forward

Dave McQuilling/AutoNotion

In the center of the dash sits a 12.9-inch touchscreen display which blends in with the rest of the interior pretty well. Volkswagen’s infotainment system is pretty solid all-round. Their maps are highly usable, and individual apps are easy to configure. It also offers wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard, though I’ve sometimes had pairing issues with Volkswagen Group vehicles. The Autobahn trim also includes a heads-up display, and in my opinion it’s a fantastic addition. I do know plenty of people dislike the feature, however.

The audio system comes courtesy of Harmon Kardon, and again does a pretty amazing job. This may reinforce my point that modern vehicle audio systems are generally excellent. You can cause yourself a good amount of ear pain with this one, if you’re that way inclined. Though if you choose to listen to your tunes at a more sensible volume, it’s brilliantly clear.

Again, the only issue is the lack of buttons. A row of tactile switches covering key functions would make the Golf GTI near-perfect, and I hope future models rectify it.

It’s surprisingly practical

Dave McQuilling/AutoNotion

Where the Golf GTI stands out is practicality.

Yes, it brings a lot to the table in terms of “fun,” but it does so while still being a solid daily driving option for many people. In terms of fuel economy, the EPA estimates drivers will average 27 MPG in a Golf GTI, with 31 MPG on the highways and 24 MPG in the city. While this is outshone by some hybrid vehicles, it’s still great for an ICE-powered car. Especially a performance-focused one. In my testing, which involved several hundred miles of highway driving along with some city-based and suburban testing, I found the 27 MPG figure to be quite accurate.

With storage space, 19.9 cubic feet of trunk space is around 33% more than you’ll get behind the third row of a Hyundai Santa Fe. It’s enough to fit a set of golf clubs, or a weekly grocery order, in. You can expand this to 34.5 cubic feet with the rear seats lowered, though the overall cabin size still hampers moving large items in the Volkswagen.

The rear seats themselves exist on the edge of practicality. The Golf does have rear doors, and they are actual seats, which puts the hatchback ahead of any “two-seater” vehicle. However, legroom is limited, even with the front seats rolled forward. You can fit a couple of adults back there, but it’s bordering on “third row in a small SUV” levels of discomfort. Volkswagen claims 35 inches of rear legroom, but it really depends on the front seat position.

Nostalgia may play a part, but I’d have one

Dave McQuilling/AutoNotion

There really is nothing like the Golf GTI. On price, yes, you can get the top trim of the Mazda Miata for around $6,000 cheaper. While the Miata edges it out on handling, the little roadster feels less powerful and offers far less practicality than the Golf.

Conversely, the GTI overlaps with the lower end of the Ford Mustang, sitting between the EcoBoost Premium Fastback and the GT Fastback. But if you have sense, you’ll pay $5,000 more for the V8 and face a different dilemma than the Miata. You’ll have more power and a better-sounding engine, but the handling will be notably worse, and again you’ll miss out on practicality.

The Golf GTI’s only real rival is something like the Civic Type R, which again is more expensive, feels a bit bigger, and doesn’t seem to handle as well. While a manual option would be wonderful, the Golf really stands alone here.

It’s an ideal blend of outright practicality and general fun. Yes, in an ideal world it would be a little cheaper. But I can’t think of anything else that’s perfect for a small family in a large city, while also capable of bringing you untold joy on a winding country lane. The only real barrier between the Golf GTI and absolute dominance of the $40,000-$50,000 price bracket is American cultural attitudes.

Which aren’t really going anywhere.

Volkswagen is leaning heavily into the family-vehicle market these days with the three-row Atlas.
