It was a bit overshadowed, since the Mission S can’t fly. But it’s definitely worth taking a look at it, since it will actually exist.

The reveal showed us a beautiful supercar with a classy, elegant, aggressive design and a driver-focused interior. But we weren’t told anything about its actual performance. Not even the drivetrain.

Now, Porsche is making it clear: It won’t be electric.

Is Porsche going full electric? Not quite

Just like the Porsche 911, the elevated Mission S will be a mid-engine performance vehicle. It won’t be electric. Just hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and ICE.

“There won’t be a BEV on that platform because there is no demand in this segment for an EV,” CEO Michael Leiters said bluntly.

It’s a pretty harsh statement, but it’s no surprise that Porsche feels this way. The luxury automaker has been struggling as sales decline into 2026. After profits plummeted by 98% following its push into an electric lineup, Porsche has major plans to move away from its original plan.

At the time, Leiters said: “We will comprehensively reposition Porsche, make the company leaner, faster, and the products even more desirable.”

This includes going back to its roots as a luxury sports car brand. The Porsche Mission S is the centerpiece, part of its “Sportwagenschmiede ’35” plan.

Said Leiters: “The Mission S provides a glimpse of the ideas and design features that will shape Porsche in the coming years.”

Porsche seems aware that those who purchase performance cars want to hear the engine, feel that rumble, that connection with their vehicle. Lamborghini recently expressed a similar sentiment after canceling its own EV supercar. The CEO said it was no longer in the works until they could figure out a way to make drivers feel connected to an electric vehicle sans fake noises.

This doesn’t mean there will be no electric cars, however. Porsche still discontinued the gas-powered 718 Boxster and Cayman, which will both go exclusively electric in 2028. This puts rumors to rest that Porsche was going to pivot back to a 718 with an engine. Leiters admitted he was a bit unsure about an electric 718. Well, until he drove it.

Only time will tell if this is another flop.

Porsche revealed the Mission S on the same day as the Tesla Roadster demonstration.
