This Plan Can’t Fail

Porsche needs huge changes, and new CEO Michael Leiters is feeling the pressure.

Porsche will have an investor meeting at its development center in Weissach on October 6th and 7th. Here, it hopes to boost investor confidence with the “Sports Car Company ’35” plan.

At this point, it’s unfortunately common knowledge that Porsche is losing sales. Its profits plummeted by an astonishing 98% in 2025 when it made a determined pivot towards an all-electric future. With the United States government fighting back against EVs and removing tax incentives for buying new ones, Porsche saw horrible sales over here. Elsewhere, Chinese EVs proved more appealing due to their lower pricing.

Going into 2026, sales continued to drop. Notably, the company’s shares have lost nearly half their value since going public in 2022, due to weak demand in China, delays, and a thinning lineup. Porsche needs to get investors back on board or it’s in deep trouble.

What is Porsche’s “Sports Car Company ’35” plan?

Leiters announced a major shift back to sports cars in March 2026 after it was revealed that the 911 was the only vehicle in its lineup not losing sales in America. But that’s not the full picture of Porsche’s upcoming plan, which includes strengthening its lineup with some new key players.

Porsche wants to reduce its scale and lean into that luxury side of things. It’s also dropping its all-electric lineup.

The gas-powered Macan was discontinued this summer, but Porsche is now replacing it with another gas-powered SUV going by “M1.” This will be a front-wheel-drive-biased 4WD system adopted from Audi’s Quattro Ultra setup, a major shift away from Porsche’s usual design philosophy. This will be released in 2028, following a three-year development period. Porsche usually takes about five years, but it is looking to speed up its slow production and hopefully reduce its production costs in the process.

Another big focus is a new high-performance sports car inspired by the 918 Spyder, a previously limited-production hybrid supercar. The 918 Spyder cost an astonishing $845,000 when it came out, which definitely aligns with Porsche’s goals of feeling more exclusive and luxurious. Going by the name “S1,” this car would be based on the 911 platform and feature a newly developed V8 engine for improved performance. It’s expected to be around $563,000.

Meanwhile, development of the “K1,” an electric SUV, has been delayed indefinitely. Its electric Boxster and Cayman programs are still up in the air.

Luxury comes at a cost

Porsche is looking to lower production volume, targeting about 180,000 vehicles. This, unfortunately, came with many layoffs as well. Leithers and employee representatives came to an agreement earlier this year that 5,000 jobs will be cut by the end of the decade. Previously, Porsche cut 3,900 employees as part of a restructuring plan.

But it’s not only workers on the ground who have faced ongoing cuts. Management has been streamlined as well. Even the executive board lost one position.

In addition to ongoing layoff plans, Leiters is seeking ways to reduce production costs across the manufacturing and sales processes. This includes implementing Volkswagen Group platforms and components as well as shortening development times with artificial intelligence.

The challenge is honing in on its sports car heritage and maintaining its high price point while finding ways to cut costs. Quality can’t be impacted.

Porsche needs huge changes, and new CEO Michael Leiters is feeling the pressure.
