Time is going by so fast this year, maybe due to the chaos.

And this includes the auto industry. We’ve seen so many crazy changes in the last 10 months, from automakers pivoting from electric plans and canceling upcoming EVs to brands leaving the United States altogether thanks to the Trump Administration’s ongoing war on Chinese EVs. The landscape has been changing so rapidly.

Now that we’re in the third quarter of 2026, Car and Driver has shared which automakers have come out on top in this crazy market (as well as those that have suffered).

Winners of 2026 so far: SUVs

Credit: Kia

This comes as no surprise, but SUVs are having a moment. I know, I know, you’re shocked. Shaking. Americans love their big, ugly SUVs, and 2026 is no different. Kia saw 236,659 units sold in the third quarter, an 8% year-over-year increase, driven by the Kia Seltos (70% increase), Sorento (21% increase), Telluride (18% increase), and Sportage (8% increase). Hyundai was another big player in the SUV game, with the Tuscon seeing a 23% increase in Q3 to 64,075 units.

But it wasn’t only SUVs that saw some love. Americans were also vibing with the Kia Carnival minivan (thanks to millennial dads), the light-duty Ram 1500 pickup, which saw 76,650 sales (a whopping 73% increase), and the BMW 3-Series, up 46% in Q3. Another surprising winner was the Corvette. While the Mustang is still the best-selling sports car in the U.S., the C8 Corvette has been a major player in the space, with 6,585 sales in the third quarter, a 29% year-over-year increase.

Losers of 2026 so far: EVs

Electric vehicles are the clear losers of 2026, particularly for American brands. Interest in EVs has waned ever since the Trump Administration removed the tax incentive for the pretty expensive vehicle segment. Hybrids are the new focus for many car brands, giving the Toyota Prius plenty of competition. Cadillac’s electric SUVs are struggling, with Lyriq sales 51% down. Its other electric SUVs aren’t doing much better. Chevrolet is another American brand that is struggling to sell EVs. The Equinox EV was down 92% in Q3, selling just 1,905 units, and the Blazer EV saw an 84% decline. Yikes. Even the Silverado EV had a 58% decline. But even the smaller Chevy Bolt has been struggling.

Unfortunately for EV fans, we’re not done yet. Ford saw a small decline in the third quarter, but one of the biggest failures has been the Mustang Mach-E. Once a pretty popular choice, the Mach-E saw a 72% decline in Q3, selling just 5,574 units. This is a 59% decline year-over-year. Jeep is another American brand that can’t seem to sell EVs. Most of its vehicles were a bit of a disaster, but the electric Jeep Wagoneer S was the worst: it was down by 96% in Q3. Only 146 units were sold. It’s not a real shocker, but people don’t want an electric Jeep for off-roading.

It should be noted that it’s not just American brands that can’t sell EVs in the U.S. Hyundai and Kia have also seen a pretty rough Q3. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 was down 53%, the Kia EV6 was down 57%, and the Genesis GV60 was down 53%, just to name a few.

It’s officially October, people!
