Fresno laid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/flat-solar-panels-fresno-tilted\/\">1.7 megawatts of panels flat in the dirt<\/a> at a treatment plant this year, and a Napa winery has kept <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/california-winery-solar-panels-pond\/\">panels floating on its irrigation pond<\/a> since 2008. I get why. These places own fenced land, run around the clock and pay ugly power bills.<\/p>\n<p>So when Vienna said last week that it wants solar at its main sewage plant, you could file that under routine. Then I read how. The city is hanging 504 solar modules from steel cables directly over an open tank of wastewater, on a roof that packs itself away in 30 seconds when the weather turns nasty.<\/p>\n<h2>So why not just build a fixed roof over the tank?<\/h2>\n<p>The tank in question is a primary clarifier, and a primary clarifier is frankly one of the worst places on Earth to park a permanent structure. Wastewater flows in and slows down, and physics does the work from there. Solids sink to the bottom. Grease and scum float to the top.<\/p>\n<p>Slow-moving scrapers push both toward collection points, and crews need to see the surface, reach the mechanism and get equipment in fast whenever something jams. A fixed canopy would sit in the way of all that, and floating panels are out for the same reason, because on a clarifier the water surface is the working part.<\/p>\n<p>So Vienna&#8217;s operator went shopping for a roof that can get out of its own way.<\/p>\n<p>The design comes from dhp Technology, a Swiss company that builds what it calls solar folding roofs. The modules hang from a cable structure, basically ropeway hardware laid flat, and slide open or shut like a curtain on rails. J\u00fcrgen Czernohorszky, Vienna&#8217;s climate councilor, said in the <a href=\"https:\/\/presse.wien.gv.at\/presse\/2026\/08\/25\/ludwig-czernohorszky-wiens-klaeranlage-nutzt-klaerbecken-fuer-sauberen-sonnenstrom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">City of Vienna&#8217;s announcement<\/a> that the roof &#8220;can be retracted or extended within 30 seconds&#8221; (translated from German), and that a fixed system was never an option because the basin has to stay reachable for maintenance.<\/p>\n<h2>The roof itself is a 63-ton curtain<\/h2>\n<p>The roof measures 115 by 164 feet (35 by 50 meters), and the basin under it runs 108 by 230 feet (33 by 70 meters), so a stretch of tank stays in the open. The structure weighs about 63 tons (57 metric tons) all in. Clearance under the modules is 14.3 feet (4.35 meters), which leaves room for people and machinery to work the basin as if nothing were up there, with the top of the frame at 20.7 feet (6.3 meters).<\/p>\n<p>Installed capacity is 262 kilowatts, good for roughly 260 megawatt-hours a year. That is about what 25 average American homes pull annually, going by the EIA&#8217;s household figure of 10,500 kilowatt-hours, so nobody is lighting up Vienna with this thing. A weather controller reels the roof in on its own when strong wind, heavy snow or hail is on the way, and the city says that downtime is already baked into the 260 figure.<\/p>\n<p>What I can&#8217;t find anywhere is a price. If you have ever driven past one of these plants with the windows down, you know why the land around them stays cheap. This one swallows about 1,600 gallons a second (6,000 liters), which works out to 53 billion gallons a year (200 million cubic meters), with roughly 170 people running the place around the clock.<\/p>\n<p>Ebswien, the city-owned company that operates it, covered 110 percent of the plant&#8217;s electricity and 173 percent of its heat from its own generation in 2025, most of it squeezed out of sewage sludge. The city calls it the third-largest treatment plant in the European Union, and it likes reminding people that the Danube leaves Vienna as clean as it arrived.<\/p>\n<p>So why does a plant already running a surplus bother with a 262-kilowatt pilot?<\/p>\n<p>G\u00fcnther Schmalzer, the ebswien director, answered that in the announcement. The plant expects its own power demand to climb noticeably in the coming years, and the surplus only survives if new generation comes online alongside it. Covering tanks the company already owns is arguably the cheapest real estate it will ever get.<\/p>\n<h2>The Swiss have been folding solar roofs since 2017<\/h2>\n<p>dhp put up the first of these roofs over the treatment plant in Chur, Switzerland, back in 2017, a 643-kilowatt pilot the company says covers about 20 percent of that plant&#8217;s electricity use.<\/p>\n<p>The idea apparently aged well. On October 31, 2025, the ARA Thunersee plant near Bern inaugurated a 3.6-megawatt version spanning more than 215,000 square feet (20,000 square meters) of its basins, the largest folding solar roof in the world according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhp-technology.ch\/en\/news\/gr%C3%B6sstes-solarfaltdach-der-welt-auf-der-ara-thunersee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">dhp Technology<\/a>, with Albert R\u00f6sti, the Swiss cabinet member in charge of energy, showing up for the ribbon-cutting.<\/p>\n<p>Around 20 of these roofs were running by late 2025, with roughly 30 more in planning or construction, per figures released at the Thunersee opening. Switzerland in general cannot stop putting solar in strange places; the country is also testing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/switzerland-train-solar-power-plant-railway\/\">panels bolted between the rails of a live railway line<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Vienna&#8217;s roof is small next to Thunersee, 262 kilowatts against 3,600, but the city drew it up as a first step rather than a trophy. An ebswien feasibility study found 46,000 square meters of basin surface on the site that could take folding roofs, about 11 acres, or nearly seven soccer fields by the city&#8217;s own count. If the pilot behaves, the expansion gets debated with real production data in hand.<\/p>\n<p>Construction over the clarifier the plant calls Vorkl\u00e4rung West 2 is due to wrap by June 2027, and Vienna put the announcement out on August 25, 2026, which gives the Swiss about ten months of lead time to hang a 63-ton curtain over the sewage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>American water plants have turned into solar testbeds.
