I usually stretch it to a year or so, and nothing bad has happened yet. Britain has been running a much bigger version of that experiment since 1985, except the water comes off a nuclear site and the filter was only designed to last 25 years. It has been on the job for 41.<\/p>\n<p>The filter in question is called SIXEP, short for Site Ion Exchange Effluent Plant, and it sits at Sellafield in Cumbria, the site the National Audit Office ranks as the most hazardous on Britain&#8217;s nuclear estate. People who work there call it the kidneys of the site. Water gets used all over Sellafield to cool spent fuel in storage ponds, including waste left over from the country&#8217;s first generation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/french-plant-graphite-american-reactor\/\">graphite-moderated reactors<\/a>, and that water picks up radioactive cesium and strontium along the way. SIXEP pulls those isotopes out before the water is discharged to the Irish Sea. It has been doing that around the clock since May 28, 1985.<\/p>\n<p>On August 18, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/latest-crane-lifts-mark-major-progress-on-sixep-continuity-plant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Sellafield Ltd announced<\/a> that the replacement, the SIXEP Continuity Plant, is now 75 percent complete after a run of heavy crane lifts. Before we get to what went in, you should know what this thing actually filters with, because the answer is not what I expected from a British nuclear cleanup.<\/p>\n<h2>So where does the Mojave Desert come in?<\/h2>\n<p>Sellafield&#8217;s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/case-studies\/the-sellafield-site-ion-exchange-effluent-plant-sixep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">case study on SIXEP<\/a> lays out the process in two steps. Contaminated water first runs through sand bed filters, which catch the fine particles. Then it passes through beds of clinoptilolite, a natural zeolite mineral that Sellafield sources from the Mojave Desert in California. Sellafield staff have described it as a special sand. So the water leaving Britain&#8217;s most contaminated industrial site gets its final scrub from crushed American desert rock. I find that genuinely great.<\/p>\n<p>Ion exchange sounds fancy, but the principle is pretty much the same one your home water softener runs on. The mineral is riddled with microscopic pores holding loosely attached, harmless ions. When a cesium or strontium ion drifts past, the mineral grabs it and releases a harmless one in its place. The radioactive material stays locked in the rock, which gets stored on site. The water moves on. Sellafield says those beds strip out over 99.9 percent of the remaining cesium and strontium, and researchers who have studied the plant&#8217;s mineral, which comes from the Mud Hills deposit, measured the water&#8217;s contact time with it at roughly eight minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1985, SIXEP has processed more than 7.9 billion gallons (30 million cubic meters) of water, which by Sellafield&#8217;s math would supply every household in the UK for about three days.<\/p>\n<p>So what happens if a 41-year-old plant with no backup finally quits?<\/p>\n<p>Nobody wants to find out. The government&#8217;s own business case for the replacement puts the probability of the existing process vessels and pipework failing at more than 50 percent before 2050, and notes the risk started climbing after 2025. The old plant was built with single points of failure, which was a normal way to engineer things in 1979 and is a slightly terrifying one now. Losing it would halt the cleanup programs upstream that depend on it, and Sellafield&#8217;s cleanup is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/sellafield-robot-dog-nuclear\/\">a job so long and so hazardous<\/a> that robot dogs already walk its hot zones and the schedule runs to 2125.<\/p>\n<h2>The replacement is three-quarters built<\/h2>\n<p>The SIXEP Continuity Plant is going up just north of the original, and the August update marks the point where the project stopped being a construction site and started becoming a machine. The main buildings are finished and weathertight, so the work has moved inside. The sanctioned mid-range cost climbed from \u00a3574 million (about $775 million) at the 2020 outline stage to \u00a31,007 million (about $1.36 billion) in the <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/65c160277042820013752264\/sixep-continuity-plant-business-case.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">full business case<\/a>, and the high-end forecast runs to \u00a31,250 million (about $1.7 billion). Before you ask why they didn&#8217;t just build a whole new SIXEP from scratch, the government studied that too. A full replacement would have cost \u00a3600 million to \u00a31,800 million more (about $810 million to $2.4 billion) and taken longer, which matters when the plant you&#8217;re protecting against is already past its design life.<\/p>\n<p>The new plant is set to begin active commissioning in 2029 and reach full operations in 2030, and it gets some upgrades the 1985 original never had. It&#8217;s designed to minimize single points of failure, it can switch to an alternative ion exchange material if a better one comes along, and it includes new storage for the spent, radioactive clinoptilolite, which is currently one of the old plant&#8217;s bigger headaches. The effluent treatment job itself needs doing until at least 2060.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, one thing the August update doesn&#8217;t give you is a date for the pipe bridge that will physically connect the new plant to the old one, and that&#8217;s the piece that actually lets the water switch over. Britain has a track record of quietly clever hardware in its cooling water, like the power station that scrubs its condenser tubes with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/forty-one-blue-balls-half-an-hour\/\">little blue rubber balls<\/a>, so I&#8217;d expect the changeover plumbing to be less glamorous than the 60.6-ton crane and every bit as important.<\/p>\n<p>Sellafield Ltd published the milestone on August 18, 2026, with the plant at 75 percent complete and about three years of fit-out and commissioning ahead of it.
