Ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz this spring got a much worse version of that failure. Their screens put them inside airports, on top of a nuclear plant, and on dry Iranian ground, all while the hulls sat in open water.<\/p>\n<p>An Australian company spent August arguing there is a way around the problem, and it starts by switching the satellites off on purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Q-CTRL, based in Sydney, ran a 95-foot vessel (29 meters) across 51.6 miles (83 km) of the Coral Sea off Australia&#8217;s east coast with satellite navigation excluded from the entire measurement chain. The system held position to within one nautical mile, which is 1.15 statute miles or 6,076 feet. Q-CTRL <a href=\"https:\/\/q-ctrl.com\/blog\/q-ctrl-achieves-worlds-first-gps-free-quantum-gravimetric-navigation-demonstration-in-maritime-field-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">announced the result<\/a> on August 27, 2026, and the research team posted the full manuscript to arXiv the day before.<\/p>\n<p>The instrument steering the boat was a quantum gravimeter. A seamount, a trench, a slab of dense rock buried under soft sediment: each one tugs a fraction harder or softer than the water sitting next to it. Those variations are fixed features of the planet, and they have been mapped from orbit. Gravity does not broadcast.<\/p>\n<p>Q-CTRL&#8217;s sensor measures the local pull and compares it against a satellite-derived gravity anomaly map. When the measured lumps line up with the mapped lumps, the ship knows where it is.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing gets transmitted. Nothing gets received.<\/p>\n<p>Gravity is the reason the method is so awkward to attack. Jamming works by drowning a weak satellite signal in noise, and spoofing works by feeding a receiver a convincing counterfeit. Neither trick does anything to an instrument that reads the planet instead of the sky. Jason Ralph, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Electronics at the University of Liverpool, put it in the Q-CTRL release as gravity sensing being the only passive alternative-navigation technology that is <a href=\"https:\/\/q-ctrl.com\/blog\/q-ctrl-achieves-worlds-first-gps-free-quantum-gravimetric-navigation-demonstration-in-maritime-field-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">global in extent and impossible to jam or spoof<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>A cloud of cold atoms is doing the measuring<\/h2>\n<p>Cold-atom gravimeters all work on the same principle. Lasers chill a cloud of atoms to a hair above absolute zero, then drop it and split it along two paths with pulses of light before letting the paths recombine. The interference pattern that comes out depends on exactly how hard gravity pulled during the fall.<\/p>\n<p>That gives you an absolute reading rather than a relative one, which matters because a conventional spring-based accelerometer slowly wanders off its own zero and needs to be told the truth again every so often.<\/p>\n<p>Q-CTRL&#8217;s team hybridized the atomic sensor with a classical accelerometer to stabilize its bias, then mechanized a navigation-grade inertial measurement unit alongside it. Errors accumulate the longer it runs, so a crew that loses satellites at hour one is in worse shape at hour ten. A long voyage is exactly the wrong shape of problem for it. Gravity map matching does not care how long the trip has been, because it fixes position against a feature of the planet rather than against a running total of where the ship thinks it has been. The map is the same map it was yesterday. That is the difference the Coral Sea run was built to show.<\/p>\n<h2>Cold atoms normally need a laboratory. This one got a passenger cabin<\/h2>\n<p>Gravimeters of this class usually arrive with a support package: active temperature control, a heavy gyroscopic platform to keep the instrument level while the deck rolls, and frequent manual recalibration. That baggage is why the technology has spent decades in papers rather than on boats.<\/p>\n<p>Q-CTRL installed this one in an uncontrolled cabin with no environmental stabilization and no calibration, and let AI-driven control software do the steadying instead.<\/p>\n<p>The engineering result buried in the paper is the configuration comparison. The team ran the sensor both gimbaled, sitting on a stabilizing mount, and strapdown, bolted rigidly to the vessel so it pitches and rolls with everything else, over identical traversals. Both configurations performed comparably. Strapdown is the one that matters commercially, because it removes the mount, the mass and the maintenance that come with it.<\/p>\n<p>In a second mode that did use satellite reference, the same rig surveyed coastal routes in seas up to Sea State 4, which on the standard scale means roughly 4 to 8 foot waves. It agreed with existing gravimetric maps at the milligal level and repeated itself below one milligal. Windward calls it the largest single-quarter concentration of maritime jamming events ever recorded.<\/p>\n<p>Compare that against the six months before it. Across the second half of 2025, jamming affected more than 18,300 vessels globally, and the fourth quarter alone hit about 6,700 vessels against 11,600 in the third.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly 20 percent of the world&#8217;s seaborne oil moves through the Strait of Hormuz, and precise navigation in that channel is not optional.<\/p>\n<p>The geography keeps widening, too. Jamming turned up off Venezuela for the first time in December 2025, coinciding with the largest U.S. naval presence in the Caribbean in nearly 40 years, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/safety4sea.com\/maritime-gps-jamming-hits-record-levels-in-q1-of-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Windward data published by SAFETY4SEA<\/a>. Russia now runs jamming at all of its oil export ports to make Ukrainian drone strikes harder. The container ship MSC Antonia ran aground in the Red Sea near Jeddah on May 10, 2025, in an incident researchers have publicly linked to GPS interference.<\/p>\n<p>The Baltic has its own version of this argument playing out with hardware rather than physics. A Danish surveillance boat sat at anchor near Bornholm in June while a Russian corvette ran past it with its transponder switched off, and the Danes only found out how thin their coverage was by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/danish-drone-boat-baltic-russian-corvette\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parking a robot there to check<\/a>. The U.S. Navy has been working the same water from underneath, running <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/underwater-drone-us-baltic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an Iver3 across the Baltic seabed<\/a> where the cables keep getting cut.<\/p>\n<h2>One nautical mile is not GPS, and Q-CTRL is not saying it is<\/h2>\n<p>GPS on a clear day gets a ship to within a few meters. One nautical mile is 6,076 feet, so nobody is docking on this. Nobody claims otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>What the number buys you is a bound. Q-CTRL&#8217;s claim is that the error stops growing, which is the part an inertial system cannot promise, and the company puts the margin over a navigation-grade inertial backup at more than ten times. That comparison is Q-CTRL&#8217;s, made in its own press release. The arXiv abstract states the result more plainly, as bounded positioning at nautical-mile-level accuracy with satellite navigation excluded throughout.<\/p>\n<p>The paper is also a preprint. Twenty-two authors submitted it on August 26, 2026, and it has not been through peer review.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;world first&#8221; wording deserves the same care. Gravity-aided navigation as a concept goes back decades, and Q-CTRL&#8217;s own release says so. The specific claim its authors make is narrower: the first fully satellite-independent gravity-map-matching navigation run using a quantum gravimeter to be reported in the open literature, plus the first same-instrument comparison of gimbaled and strapdown mobile quantum gravimetry.<\/p>\n<p>Q-CTRL went to gravity for the ocean for a practical reason rather than an elegant one. Its airborne product, MagNav, reads the Earth&#8217;s magnetic fingerprint instead, and in <a href=\"https:\/\/q-ctrl.com\/blog\/q-ctrl-overcomes-gps-denial-with-quantum-sensing-achieves-quantum-advantage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">ground and airborne trials announced in April 2025<\/a> the company reported up to 50 times lower positioning uncertainty than an inertial navigation system over a 311-mile (500 km) flight, with 99.97 percent uptime. Magnetic survey maps of the open ocean are thin. Gravity maps of the ocean are not, because satellite altimetry has been reading sea-surface shape for years, and sea-surface shape follows gravity.<\/p>\n<h2>Who is already holding this thing<\/h2>\n<p>Q-CTRL lists contracts with DARPA, the U.S. Defense Innovation Unit, the Australian Department of Defence, the UK Royal Navy and other AUKUS partners. Retired U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant General Steve Sklenka, quoted in the company&#8217;s release, framed assured navigation as a warfighting necessity rather than a convenience.<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Navy thread is the oldest one in the story. Q-CTRL&#8217;s April 2025 release noted that the Navy&#8217;s Disruptive Capabilities and Technologies Office had already backed field trials of mobile quantum gravimetry for maritime use, well before anything sailed into the Coral Sea. The same navy has been quietly retiring crewed survey ships and replacing them with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/american-drone-royal-navy-slocum-sentinel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gliders that stay under for two years at a stretch<\/a>, which are exactly the platforms with no room for a gyro-stabilized instrument and no crew to recalibrate one.<\/p>\n<p>Michael J. Biercuk founded Q-CTRL in 2017 and still runs it.
