The company&#8217;s boats map seafloor nobody has charted, sit inside hurricanes taking readings that would kill a crew, and listen for submarines for months at a stretch without anyone aboard.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere off Hawaii this summer, one of them shot at something.<\/p>\n<p>Saildrone and Lockheed Martin announced on August 20 that a Surveyor-class uncrewed surface vessel fired two Joint Air-to-Ground Missiles during RIMPAC 2026, hitting targeting data supplied by a carrier strike group. It is the first time a missile has left a Saildrone hull.<\/p>\n<p>Worth getting the timing straight, because the announcement makes it sound like this week. RIMPAC 2026 ran from June 24 to July 31. The shooting happened weeks ago. What is new is that the companies are talking about it.<\/p>\n<h2>How the shot actually worked<\/h2>\n<p>The Surveyor carried a Lockheed launcher and the Navy&#8217;s Adjunct Remote Engagement System, a remotely operated combat system that lets a shore-based crew run a weapon through a hull nobody is standing on.<\/p>\n<p>Targeting came from outside the boat. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.workboat.com\/saildrone-lockheed-martin-conduct-first-live-fire-missile-launches\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">WorkBoat reported<\/a> the Surveyor worked with USS Theodore Roosevelt&#8217;s Carrier Strike Group 9, acting on data for a surrogate high-speed surface craft. The drone was the trigger, not the eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Sponsorship came from the Navy&#8217;s Fleet Experimentation Program, which is the service&#8217;s way of finding out whether an idea survives contact with saltwater before anyone signs a procurement contract.<\/p>\n<p>One detail the companies pushed hard: a human made the firing decision. Saildrone says the demonstration involved no autonomous weapons, and given how that conversation goes in Washington, expect that line in every release from here on.<\/p>\n<h2>Two rounds or four? The sources disagree<\/h2>\n<p>The RIMPAC announcement describes a JAGM Dual Launcher. The program that produced it does not.<\/p>\n<p>When Lockheed and Saildrone signed their deal, the hardware named was the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.lockheedmartin.com\/2025-10-29-Lockheed-Martin-Invests-50M-in-Saildrone-to-Advance-Unmanned-Surface-Vehicle-Capabilities-for-US-Navy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">JAGM Quad Launcher, or JQL<\/a>, a four-round system to be marinized for the Surveyor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navalnews.com\/naval-news\/2026\/07\/jagm-armed-saildrone-surveyor-usv-rimpac-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Naval News photographed the boat<\/a> leaving Pearl Harbor in July, hull number SD-3001, and described a custom launcher able to fire four AGM-179 JAGMs. Two rounds went downrange. The rack may well hold twice that.<\/p>\n<p>The missile is a known quantity either way. Lockheed announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saildrone.com\/media-room\/press-releases\/lockheed-martin-invests-usd-50m-saildrone-advance-unmanned-surface-vehicle-capabilities-us-navy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">$50 million investment in Saildrone on October 29, 2025<\/a>, with live-fire demonstrations promised for 2026.<\/p>\n<p>They made it with weeks to spare. The investment and the partnership are the same thing, incidentally, not two separate deals, and the date is October rather than November.<\/p>\n<p>Saildrone&#8217;s chief executive Richard Jenkins framed the achievement as combination rather than invention, calling it a pairing of a trusted munition with a heavily deployed class of drone. Neither piece is new. The bolting together is.<\/p>\n<p>Lockheed&#8217;s Paul Lemmo, who runs sensors, effectors and mission systems, said the company will keep investing &#8220;in new capabilities ahead of need.&#8221; Read that as spending before the requirement exists so you are holding the product when it does.<\/p>\n<h2>The listening trick nobody put in the headline<\/h2>\n<p>While the missiles got the video, the same boat did something quieter and arguably more useful.<\/p>\n<p>Working with an MH-60S helicopter, the Surveyor ran a passive electronic warfare sensor that detected, classified and identified a surrogate threat radar. Passive means it never transmitted. It sat there and worked out who was looking at it.<\/p>\n<p>That matters more than a JAGM in a real fight. A hull with nobody aboard, no emissions and months of endurance is a very cheap way to know what is radiating across a stretch of ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Missiles are a one-time expenditure. Listening is a permanent one, and this boat can do it for a long time without anybody worrying about the crew.<\/p>\n<h2>Spectre is where the wing comes off<\/h2>\n<p>The Surveyor shot is a stepping stone. The platform it is stepping toward is a different class of machine entirely.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saildrone.com\/media-room\/press-releases\/saildrone-unveils-spectre-new-class-high-speed-unmanned-surface-vessel-usv-naval-operations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Saildrone unveiled Spectre in April<\/a>: 170 feet, 250 tonnes, up to 30 knots, payload capacity above 70 tonnes. Range runs to 3,280 nautical miles in flat water and 2,790 in Sea State 4.<\/p>\n<p>The deck is concealed behind bulwarks and takes two 40-foot containers or as many as five 20-foot ones. It can carry two Mk 70 vertical launchers, which fire Tomahawks and SM-6s, and deploy the CAPTAS-4 variable-depth sonar.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the line that reframes the whole company. Spectre was designed from the start to operate without the wing when it needs sprint speed and a low profile for strike work.<\/p>\n<p>The wind-powered ocean robot grew up into something that runs on engines when there is shooting to do. Saildrone is still Saildrone on the ASW missions, where silence is the whole point, but the kinetic version is a warship in a smaller package.<\/p>\n<h2>Congress already wrote the check<\/h2>\n<p>None of this is speculative funding. The 2025 reconciliation bill put close to $5 billion into Navy unmanned programs, a Navy official told <a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2026\/03\/26\/navy-creates-new-marketplace-for-medium-unmanned-surface-vessels-after-cancelling-masc-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">USNI News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The breakdown includes $2.1 billion for medium uncrewed surface vessels, $1.5 billion for small USV production, and $1.3 billion to expand underwater vehicle manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>In March the Navy killed its Modular Attack Surface Craft program and replaced it with an MUSV &#8220;marketplace,&#8221; a competition where vendors absorb development cost and only working boats advance. Seven designs made the cut by May.<\/p>\n<p>The requirement asks for hulls carrying containerized payloads sized for the Mk 70 Mod 1. Spectre was drawn to that spec before the spec was published, which is either good market reading or a very comfortable coincidence.<\/p>\n<p>The Navy has since conceded MUSV will cost more than the $2.1 billion budgeted. The FY2027 plan reportedly runs $3.1 billion through FY2031 for 47 platforms.<\/p>\n<h2>The exchange rate argument<\/h2>\n<p>Lockheed had a use case for this before RIMPAC. During the Red Sea campaign the company pitched JAGM as a counter-drone option for destroyers and littoral combat ships, on the logic that shooting cheap one-way attack drones with area air defense missiles is economically insane.<\/p>\n<p>Put the launcher on a drone instead and the math gets worse for whoever is sending the drones. Nobody has to risk a destroyer to park a shooter in a shipping lane.<\/p>\n<p>That same cost logic is reshaping the rest of the undersea and surface fleet. Anduril is building <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/drone-submarines-200-a-year-rhode-island\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">underwater drones in Rhode Island at rates measured in hundreds per year<\/a>, and seabed sensors are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/american-seabed-drone-navy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">replacing Cold War cable arrays with untethered nodes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>What this does and does not prove<\/h2>\n<p>A 65-foot boat with two missiles is not a combatant. It is slow, lightly armed, and has no damage control party when something catches fire.<\/p>\n<p>What the demonstration established is narrower and more useful. An existing Navy combat system can run an uncrewed shooter over a data link, and a commercial hull can absorb a live launch without ending up upside down.<\/p>\n<p>Those two facts are what a program office needs before it writes a requirement. Everything after this is scaling.<\/p>\n<p>The next shot comes off a bigger hull with a launcher that fires Tomahawks.
