That is the standard unit of solar over there: a few strings on a suburban roof, sized around the air conditioning and the hot water.<\/p>\n<p>Anna Creek Station, in the far north of South Australia, takes its primary power from 49 kilowatts of panels. Not quite five suburban systems, running the headquarters of the largest working cattle station on Earth, on a property that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pv-magazine-australia.com\/2026\/08\/07\/worlds-largest-cattle-station-installs-microgrid-as-primary-power-source\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">pv magazine Australia<\/a> puts at roughly 23,800 square kilometers, or about 9,200 square miles. New Jersey is smaller than that.<\/p>\n<p>This is not a pilot or a sustainability page. The array carries the station and homestead loads day to day, and the diesel generators that used to do all of it now sit as backup for bad weather and unusual demand.<\/p>\n<p>The reason it turned up in the trade press this week is a policy one. Australia&#8217;s federal government has just moved to make mid-sized commercial rooftop solar considerably cheaper, and the biggest cattle station in the world makes an awkward poster child for it, because its array is less than half the size of the threshold the reform was written to fix.<\/p>\n<h2>The property is enormous, the electrical load is not<\/h2>\n<p>The 49 kilowatts feed the main station and homestead: air conditioning, refrigeration, kitchen equipment, communications and general station infrastructure. That is the entire job.<\/p>\n<p>Cattle do not draw current. Neither do 9,200 square miles of gibber tableland and sand hill. What needs electricity at Anna Creek is a cluster of buildings and the people inside them, and the owner is fairly specific about how many people that is.<\/p>\n<p>Williams Cattle Company&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.williamscattlecompany.com.au\/anna-creek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">own page for the property<\/a> lists a manager, up to eight station hands, a plant operator and a cook. Eleven people, at most, against 17,000 head of cattle.<\/p>\n<p>So the sizing makes sense the moment you stop thinking of it as a power plant for a ranch and start thinking of it as a power plant for a building. It is a big house in a hot place, a long way from anything.<\/p>\n<p>The hardware is standard off-grid gear rather than anything exotic: Hanwha Q Cells modules, Pylontech US3000 lithium batteries, Victron Quattro inverter\/chargers, Victron SmartSolar 450\/200 charge controllers, Fronius Symo inverters on the AC-coupled side, and a Victron Cerbo GX handling monitoring and control.<\/p>\n<p>None of this is new, either. The installer <a href=\"https:\/\/myenergysolar.com.au\/energy-experts-blog\/off-grid-power-anna-creek-station\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">published its own account of the Anna Creek build in January 2024<\/a>, with the same component list. The system has been carrying the place for years. Phoenix averages 7.2 inches.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>A forgotten part costs you an 1,120-mile round trip<\/h2>\n<p>Anna Creek sits 160 kilometers east of Coober Pedy and 16 kilometers west of William Creek, which works out to about 99 miles and 10 miles respectively. Neither of those places is going to have a spare Victron charge controller on a shelf.<\/p>\n<p>Ciaram Granger, managing director of the South Australian installer MyEnergy Engineering, told pv magazine Australia that the size of the system was never the hard part. The location was.<\/p>\n<p>Planning had to be exhaustive, he said, because &#8220;additional materials, equipment or support could not simply be collected nearby.&#8221; The publication put a number on what nearby means out there: an 1,800-kilometer round trip back to Adelaide, about 1,120 miles, if something did not make it onto the truck.<\/p>\n<p>That is a two-day errand to fetch a part worth a couple of hundred dollars. It also explains a design choice that looks like overkill on a system this small.<\/p>\n<p>The whole thing is watched remotely through Victron&#8217;s VRM platform, so a fault gets diagnosed from an office rather than from the side of a dirt road. On a suburban roof, remote monitoring is a nice-to-have. Here it decides whether a problem costs a phone call or a thousand miles of driving.<\/p>\n<p>The site also had to cope with heat and dust, and with loads that swing depending on what the station is doing that week. Granger listed those alongside the distance as the constraints the design had to survive.<\/p>\n<h2>The diesel did not go away, it just got demoted<\/h2>\n<p>Worth being precise here, because remote solar stories tend to get oversold. Anna Creek&#8217;s generators are still installed and still integrated. They come on in poor weather or when demand spikes.<\/p>\n<p>What changed is the running order. Solar and battery carry the site by default, and the engines cover the gaps rather than the whole day.<\/p>\n<p>That is the same pattern showing up across Australian industry at wildly different scales. At the other end of it, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/off-grid-gold-mine-australia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bellevue gold mine in Western Australia ran 155 straight hours with every engine switched off<\/a>, powering underground workings, a processing plant and a workers&#8217; village on solar, wind and a battery. Bellevue&#8217;s average site load runs around 12 megawatts, close to 250 times the entire Anna Creek array, and the engineering problem is recognizably the same one.<\/p>\n<p>The same trade keeps repeating outside mining too. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/salmon-farm-diesel-generator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">salmon farm above the Arctic Circle now covers more than 90% of its load with floating solar<\/a> and has barely touched its generator since. In none of these cases does the diesel disappear. It stops being the thing you plan the week around.<\/p>\n<p>There is a neat inversion in the livestock angle, incidentally. Most stories about animals and solar run the other way, with panels going up first and sheep brought in afterwards to eat the grass, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/china-world-largest-solar-farm-sheep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how the world&#8217;s largest solar farm in China ended up needing 20,000 of them<\/a>. At Anna Creek the cattle were there first by about 160 years, and the panels are on the roof of the house.<\/p>\n<h2>So how big is Anna Creek, actually?<\/h2>\n<p>The 23,800 square kilometer figure is the one that travels, and it is the one pv magazine used. It is worth a footnote, because the station&#8217;s owner publishes a smaller number.<\/p>\n<p>Williams Cattle Company lists Anna Creek itself at 15,746 square kilometers, about 6,080 square miles. The bigger figure that shows up in the record books bundles in The Peake, the outstation the company bought alongside Anna Creek in December 2016 and lists as a separate property on the same website.<\/p>\n<p>Neither number is wrong. They are counting different things, and the record-book version quietly does some heavy lifting. Anna Creek on its own is still larger than Connecticut, and the company runs seven other pastoral properties in the same corner of the state.<\/p>\n<p>The station&#8217;s own page also gives the detail that makes the solar case obvious: 140 millimeters of rain a year, or about 5.5 inches. Phoenix, on the 1991 to 2020 normals, gets 7.2 inches. Anna Creek is drier than Phoenix, and sunshine is the one input nobody has to truck in.<\/p>\n<h2>The new solar rebate is aimed at systems 20 times this one<\/h2>\n<p>On August 5, the federal government announced it will let solar systems between 100 kilowatts and 1 megawatt create small-scale technology certificates, the upfront rebate that has driven Australian rooftop solar for years. Anything above 100 kilowatts had been pushed into the large-scale certificate market instead.<\/p>\n<p>Per the <a href=\"https:\/\/cer.gov.au\/news-and-media\/news\/2026\/august\/expansion-solar-photovoltaic-pv-eligibility-under-small-scale-renewable-energy-scheme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Clean Energy Regulator<\/a>, the change is intended to apply to mid-scale solar installed from October 1, 2026, subject to the regulations actually being made. The system was finished before the announcement, and at 49 kilowatts it never came close to the old ceiling, never mind the new one.<\/p>\n<p>Granger, whose company stands to gain from bigger commercial jobs, was unusually candid about the downside in the same interview. More generous rebates on bigger systems mean more certificates in circulation, and if demand for those certificates does not rise at the same rate, the price drops and the rebate shrinks with it.<\/p>\n<p>He also flagged the risk of customers being sold oversized arrays that do not match how the site actually uses power. That is a strange thing for a solar installer to volunteer in a story about a solar installation, and it is the most useful line in it.<\/p>\n<h2>None of this scales up, and that is the point<\/h2>\n<p>The Anna Creek array was one of seven remote power systems MyEnergy delivered for Williams Cattle Company across Far North South Australia, a program pv magazine values at more than AU$1.5 million, roughly US$1 million. Spread across seven sites, that is a modest capital line for an operation of this size, and it buys out a recurring fuel bill and a recurring reliability problem.<\/p>\n<p>None of which makes 49 kilowatts a template. A processing plant or a pump field needs an order of magnitude more, which is exactly what the certificate change is aimed at.<\/p>\n<p>What Anna Creek does show is that the headline capacity is the wrong thing to look at first.
