There is plenty of it in the ground. The bottleneck is refining capacity, not geology.<\/p>\n<p>Nickel is the one that decides how much energy a cathode can actually hold, and the map of where it comes from is far uglier. Most of it comes out of Indonesia, which the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/technical-perspectives\/nickels-climate-cost-and-indonesias-push-cleaner-production\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">World Resources Institute<\/a> puts at close to two-thirds of global mine production in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>That output is fed by forest clearance on Sulawesi and Halmahera and by coal-fired power running the processing plants. A metal going into vehicles sold as clean arrives with a carbon bill attached.<\/p>\n<p>Then there is a hole in the ground 26 miles north of Timmins, Ontario, that received its federal approval on July 31. Crawford sits on rock that absorbs carbon dioxide on its own, and Canada Nickel Company says the mine&#8217;s own waste could lock away 1.5 million metric tons of CO2 in a peak year.<\/p>\n<p>Which sounds like investor-deck fantasy until you read the lab results.<\/p>\n<h2>Rock that reacts with carbon instead of oxygen<\/h2>\n<p>Crawford&#8217;s ore body is ultramafic. Serpentine, olivine and brucite account for more than 80% of the material down there, and all three grab atmospheric CO2 and convert it into solid carbonate minerals once fresh surfaces hit the air.<\/p>\n<p>Not stored. Not pumped into a cavern somebody has to monitor for two centuries. Converted into stone.<\/p>\n<p>Canada Nickel put the first numbers on this in November 2021, working with Kingston Process Metallurgy and Queen&#8217;s University. In a laboratory column left alone for 112 days, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newswire.ca\/news-releases\/canada-nickel-demonstrates-carbon-sequestration-potential-of-tailings-from-the-crawford-nickel-sulphide-project-891557319.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the top centimeter of tailings absorbed 17.5 kilograms of CO2 per metric ton<\/a>, about 39 pounds. That top layer is roughly four tenths of an inch thick. Averaged down the whole column, the figure fell to 4.2 kilograms, around 9 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>That gap matters more than the headline number. Company math says 4.6 kilograms per ton, about 10 pounds, is the break-even needed to cancel out the mine&#8217;s own Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. Anything above that line becomes a sellable product.<\/p>\n<p>There is photographic evidence too. Drill core left sitting in storage for a year came out wearing a white carbonate crust. Nobody did anything to it. The rock simply got on with it.<\/p>\n<h2>Speeding up geology inside the mill<\/h2>\n<p>Passive weathering is slow, and slow does not sell carbon credits. So the company built a version that runs on industrial time instead of geological time.<\/p>\n<p>The process is called In-Process Tailings Carbonation. Rather than waiting for a tailings pond to react with ambient air, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/ottawa-approves-canada-nickels-crawford-mine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">as Mining.com describes it<\/a>, a concentrated stream of CO2 is dosed into the tailings while they are still moving through the milling circuit.<\/p>\n<p>Surface area is why it works. Freshly ground rock exposes an enormous quantity of unreacted mineral face, and hitting it right then rather than six months later compresses a reaction measured in years into one measured in hours.<\/p>\n<p>Canada Nickel piloted the method in 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianminingjournal.com\/news\/pilot-plant-confirms-canada-nickels-carbon-storage-feasibility-study-due-oct-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">running more than seven metric tons of tailings through a demonstration plant<\/a> and locking down the engineering parameters. The same pilot also handled material from an outside company&#8217;s project, which suggests the technique is not welded to Crawford&#8217;s specific mineralogy.<\/p>\n<h2>Ottawa signed, but Ontario got there first<\/h2>\n<p>On July 31, Environment, Climate Change and Nature Minister Julie Dabrusin issued a positive decision statement. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/impact-assessment-agency\/news\/2026\/07\/the-federal-government-announces-major-milestone-for-the-crawford-nickel-project.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ottawa&#8217;s position<\/a> is that the effects falling inside federal jurisdiction are justified by what the project delivers, subject to binding conditions covering fish habitat, migratory birds and Indigenous land use.<\/p>\n<p>Canada Nickel calls it the first mine cleared under the Impact Assessment Act since the 2019 amendments. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/canada-nickel-secures-federal-approval-for-crawford-nickel-project-302839991.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">An independent study by Mansfield Consulting<\/a> puts the lifetime contribution near C$70 billion in Canadian GDP and around 185,000 person-years of employment.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario had been leaning on the accelerator for months before that. Crawford became the second project admitted to the province&#8217;s One Project, One Process program back in January, after Ottawa referred it to the federal Major Projects Office in late 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The trade politics are not subtle. Phase one alone accounts for US$1.9 billion.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>What 1.5 million tons actually buys<\/h2>\n<p>The peak figure assumes Crawford is running flat out. <a href=\"https:\/\/iaac-aeic.gc.ca\/050\/evaluations\/proj\/83857\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Federal filings list the mill<\/a> at 120,000 metric tons of ore input a day, fed by an open pit moving twice that volume.<\/p>\n<p>Across 41 years the company expects 54 million tons of CO2 in storage, which averages well below the peak figure because a mine does not hit full throughput on opening day.<\/p>\n<p>Canada Nickel translates the annual number into EPA-style equivalents: roughly 350,000 gasoline cars parked for a year, or the electricity consumption of about 200,000 American homes. The stated ceiling for the site, if the full tailings capacity ever gets used, runs to 15 million tons a year.<\/p>\n<h2>Automakers have a nickel problem<\/h2>\n<p>Indonesia&#8217;s dominance stopped being purely a price story some time ago. Carbon intensity per ton of metal coming out of those processing circuits is poor, and European battery rules increasingly force automakers to declare exactly that number.<\/p>\n<p>Chief executive Mark Selby has been blunt about the comparison. Speaking to reporters in Timmins in January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mining.com\/canada-nickels-crawford-project-gets-fast-tracked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">he pitched Crawford as delivering<\/a> &#8220;clean, reliable nickel with a made-in-Ontario, climate advantage&#8221; against high-carbon Indonesian supply running through Chinese-controlled chains.<\/p>\n<p>Output over the mine life is projected at roughly 3.5 billion pounds of nickel, with about 53 million pounds of cobalt alongside palladium, platinum, iron and chromium. Selby has also said the project would make his company the only chromium producer in North America.<\/p>\n<p>None of that dents Indonesian market share in any meaningful way. It does hand a Western automaker somewhere to buy nickel with a defensible carbon story attached, which is a different kind of value.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Ontario keeps producing this sort of thing. The same rock formations are being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/canada-nickel-old-mining-waste-bacteria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">worked over by bacteria to recover nickel from century-old mine waste<\/a>, and a Timmins mine nearby has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/canadian-hydrogen-rock-kidd-creek-mine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quietly leaking hydrogen out of billion-year-old rock<\/a> for more than a decade.<\/p>\n<h2>The part that is not built yet<\/h2>\n<p>Permits are one thing. A construction decision is another, and Canada Nickel has not made it.<\/p>\n<p>Feasibility work puts phase one at US$1.9 billion and the two-stage build at US$3.5 billion, with life-of-mine spending above US$5 billion. The Globe and Mail reports the current working capital estimate at US$2.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly that much is tentatively assembled: US$500 million in debt from Export Development Canada, another US$500 million from a Canadian government financing agency, close to US$600 million in tax credits tied to critical minerals and carbon storage, and Samsung SDI&#8217;s US$100 million option on a 10% stake. Around US$300 million remains open.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the near-term cash is small. On August 12 the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newswire.ca\/news-releases\/canada-nickel-announces-upsize-of-non-brokered-private-placement-to-gross-proceeds-of-up-to-c-21-0-million-828500902.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">upsized a private placement from C$15 million to as much as C$21 million<\/a>, scheduled to close around August 28. That money covers permitting, engineering and debt repayment, not construction.<\/p>\n<p>The timeline has been quietly sliding. Ontario Energy and Mines Minister Stephen Lecce talked in January about construction beginning by year-end and the mine opening in Q4 2028. Canada Nickel&#8217;s own August language points to a construction decision next year, and the Globe and Mail now reports first production in 2029.<\/p>\n<p>The chemistry has scaling left to do as well. Seven tons in a pilot plant is not 120,000 tons a day, and while carbonation reactions are indifferent to scale, CO2 supply logistics, energy input and plumbing are not.<\/p>\n<p>The rock carries on carbonating regardless of whether the financing closes. Canada Nickel&#8217;s actual invention was never the reaction itself.
