One follows the other for a while, somebody takes photographs from the bridge wing, both sides file a report, and nothing else happens. The routine assumes there is a crew at both ends of it.<\/p>\n<p>On June 25, a Russian corvette in the Baltic went to look at the other end and found nobody aboard.<\/p>\n<p>The boat it approached was the Stormborn X-Wave 01, an uncrewed Danish surveillance vessel. It had been sitting at anchor about 19 miles southeast of Bornholm for two days under a Danish flag, testing its sensors.<\/p>\n<p>The corvette <em>Soobrazitelny<\/em>, hull number 531, came past at roughly 200 meters with its position transponder switched off. Then it put a small quadcopter in the air that circled the Danish boat from a few meters away.<\/p>\n<p>Close contact lasted eight minutes. The uncrewed boat filmed the visit, logged the radar tracks, and its owner handed the lot to the Danish Navy&#8217;s maritime surveillance service. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tv2bornholm.dk\/bornholm\/russisk-krigsskib-naer-bornholm-vidner-om-anspaendt-situation-siger-orlogskaptajn-9e569\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">TV 2 published the footage and the radar plots<\/a> in mid-July.<\/p>\n<h2>The corvette came in with its transponder off<\/h2>\n<p>Stormborn had parked the boat there on purpose. Founder and chief executive Frederik S\u00f8ndergaard Hansen told TV 2 the company picked a stretch of water known to be poorly covered by the Danish military&#8217;s coastal radar, precisely to see what its own sensors would find in the gap.<\/p>\n<p>They found a Project 20380 corvette running without AIS. Simon Hviid, the operator running the boat from a control room ashore, told TV 2 that the Russians &#8220;set course straight for us,&#8221; and that nobody on the Danish side knew what they intended.<\/p>\n<p>The X-Wave had its own transponder on the whole time, so the corvette knew something was out there. Hviid&#8217;s read was that the boat&#8217;s radar emissions looked military, which is what pulled the warship in for a closer look.<\/p>\n<p>For scale, a Steregushchiy-class corvette like the <em>Soobrazitelny<\/em> runs about 330 feet long, displaces roughly 2,000 tons and carries a crew of around 100 including the helicopter detachment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalsecurity.org\/military\/world\/russia\/2038.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">according to GlobalSecurity&#8217;s rundown of the class<\/a>. The thing it had come to inspect fits on a trailer.<\/p>\n<p>Then the quadcopter lifted off the corvette&#8217;s deck and spent several minutes going over the Danish boat at close range.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.defence-ua.com\/news\/russian_ship_escorting_shadow_fleet_vessels_comes_across_danish_usv_in_the_baltic_sea-19205.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Defense Express went through the material image by image<\/a> and noted that the X-Wave&#8217;s recognition software correctly tagged crew moving on deck and the Ka-27 helicopter parked on the pad. It then repeatedly mislabeled the Russian drone as the corvette it had just flown off.<\/p>\n<p>After the drone went home, the corvette carried on. Stormborn&#8217;s radar later picked up an unidentified aircraft passing back and forth near the boat several times. The company says it has no data showing whether the corvette had been hiding from Danish coastal surveillance or was simply passing through.<\/p>\n<h2>The X-Wave is a sensor mast that travels on a trailer<\/h2>\n<p>Stormborn is a small outfit that builds the boats at its own site in Denmark, with money from the offshore contractor Semco Maritime and the venture fund Final Frontier. Baird Maritime lists it as a UK and Denmark operation and TV 2 calls it Danish. X-Wave 01 is the first vessel the company finished.<\/p>\n<p>The published spec sheet is thin by warship standards and specific where it counts. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bairdmaritime.com\/security\/naval\/unmanned-naval-systems\/vessel-review-x-wave-01-compact-durable-usv-for-patrol-monitoring-and-survey-missions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Baird Maritime&#8217;s review of the vessel<\/a> lists a Terma radar that can be tied into existing coastal radar to push coverage over the horizon, a Teledyne Marine passive acoustic array for listening underwater, and a MyDefence counter-drone system.<\/p>\n<p>Stormborn rates the platform for up to 365 days of continuous autonomous operation. That figure is the company&#8217;s own, and no independent endurance test of it has been published.<\/p>\n<p>The hull is modular, so segments and payloads can be swapped for a different job, and it is light enough to move by road. That part matters more than it sounds. A boat on a trailer does not need a naval base, a berth, a galley or a crew rotation, and it can go in the water wherever the coastline is convenient.<\/p>\n<p>It also carries a launch and recovery system for smaller uncrewed vehicles, which is where this whole category is heading. A German supplier is now selling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/german-box-crewless-boat-drone\/\">a box that throws a drone off a crewless boat at 15 knots and catches it on the way back<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What Stormborn has not published: length, displacement, top speed, range or price. The counter-drone system is the same story. Saildrone ran four Voyager uncrewed vessels for the Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saildrone.com\/news\/6-months-92-uptime-saildrone-persistent-on-station-force-baltic-sea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">published the tally in February<\/a>: more than 170,000 unique vessels detected, over 20,000 nautical miles sailed and 92% fleet uptime across six months.<\/p>\n<p>The comparison Saildrone drew is the part that gets a defense ministry&#8217;s attention. Crewed ships average closer to 30% operational availability across their service lives, because hulls need dockyards and sailors need to go home.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark&#8217;s 2025 fleet plan already committed to a development program for uncrewed naval systems, and Danish startups are attacking the same coverage problem from other directions. One Copenhagen company raised a \u20ac1 million pre-seed this month to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/danish-startup-drone-undersea-saboteurs\/\">scatter passive microphones across the seabed and listen for saboteurs<\/a> instead of chasing them.<\/p>\n<p>The US Navy has been working the same water from below, running <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/underwater-drone-us-baltic\/\">autonomous underwater vehicles across the Baltic floor off Latvia<\/a> during this summer&#8217;s exercises.<\/p>\n<p>Hansen was blunt with TV 2 about the gap he is selling into. The navy can only do so much with the few ships it has, and he thinks a fleet of cheap uncrewed hulls covers the rest.<\/p>\n<p>He said Stormborn and Semco are ready to build 50 sea drones in a year. He also told TV2 Bornholm in June that four boats of this type could cover the water between Dueodde and the German and Polish coastline.<\/p>\n<h2>Defence Command Denmark declined to say anything at all<\/h2>\n<p>Every image, radar plot and timestamp in this story came from a company that sells surveillance boats, routed through TV 2. The Danish military would not discuss it. Defence Command Denmark said it had no comment on the incident, adding only that it monitors Danish waters and straits routinely with the capabilities it has.<\/p>\n<p>Hansen says the navy&#8217;s surveillance service was very interested in what the boat had seen and in the Russian operating patterns it recorded. That is his account of the conversation, not the navy&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>His bigger claim gets the same treatment. Hansen believes this is the first time anyone has photo-documented a drone this close to Danish territory. No Danish authority has confirmed that, and the encounter happened well outside Denmark&#8217;s 12-nautical-mile territorial sea.<\/p>\n<p>TV 2 also asked him whether the encounter wasn&#8217;t the best advertising a startup could ask for. He agreed that it was, then argued it also proves the surveillance he sells is needed. He is right on both counts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hisutton.com\/Stormborn-USV-Incident.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Covert Shores analyst H I Sutton wrote the first English account of the encounter<\/a>, and reached the conclusion Stormborn would presumably like European navies to reach. Boats like this let a small navy keep tabs on Russian warships without putting a crew or an expensive hull in the way.<\/p>\n<p>He also noted the X-Wave is unarmed, and that arming something like it would not take much imagination. Ukraine has spent three years proving that point in the Black Sea, where explosive uncrewed boats have put Russian warships on the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>Five days after Bornholm, hull 531 showed up further south, where Greenpeace had four inflatables in the water beside the tanker <em>Kira K<\/em> with Danish, German and Swedish politicians aboard. By TV 2&#8217;s account, the corvette steered at the protest and ordered the activists away from the tanker over the radio. A German coast guard vessel escorted the boats back.<\/p>\n<p>So the warship went back to its day job. What changed on June 25 was the other end of the encounter.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark&#8217;s problem in the Baltic is coverage, and coverage is arithmetic: how many hulls, watching how much water, for how many days without a break. Stormborn&#8217;s answer is a boat you can tow to the coast, drop at anchor and leave there.
