Wind turbine blades get police escorts, transformers get their own rail cars, and most oversize industrial hardware arrives at its destination in pieces, ready for reassembly. The Navy&#8217;s newest shipyard crane is skipping all of that.<\/p>\n<p>It left Manitowoc, Wisconsin, on May 29 fully assembled, all 200 feet of it, standing upright on a barge behind a tugboat named Ocean Tower. The destination is Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Hawaii, roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/maritime-executive.com\/article\/giant-navy-shipyard-crane-departs-wisconsin-on-long-tow-to-hawaii\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">9,000 nautical miles away according to The Maritime Executive<\/a>, by the only route that works: out through the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway, down the Atlantic coast, through the Panama Canal and across the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>The shipyard expects it by late summer. Until then, one of the tallest structures in Manitowoc is technically a vessel.<\/p>\n<h2>The crane travels standing up, all 1,100 tons of it<\/h2>\n<p>The machine is the P-82, though almost nobody in Wisconsin calls it that. Locals call it Big Blue, a name inherited from the first crane of this type built on the same waterfront in 2021, and the cranes collectively picked up the nickname &#8220;Manitowoc&#8217;s skyscrapers.&#8221; At 200 feet, they stand about 20 stories tall, which in a town of 34,000 or so is a legitimate skyline.<\/p>\n<p>The specs, per the shipyard: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/theaters\/asia_pacific\/2026-06-03\/navy-shipbuilding-crane-pearl-harbor-hawaii-21858991.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">a 175-ton lifting capacity and a total weight of 1,100 tons<\/a>, Stars and Stripes reported. Konecranes Nuclear Equipment and Services designed and delivered it, with fabrication handled at the Broadwind plant in Manitowoc, since renamed Wisconsin Heavy Fabrication. The crane was actually finished back in late 2023 and then sat parked on the dock for over two years, waiting for its ride.<\/p>\n<p>In the Navy&#8217;s own planning documents, this thing is filed under &#8220;weight-handling system (crane type).&#8221; Which is a very Navy way of describing a 20-story machine with a name, a fan club, and a mayor posting bon voyage messages when it leaves town.<\/p>\n<p>It is not the biggest yard crane on Earth. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/crane-china-dalian-ton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China runs heavier lifting hardware at Dalian<\/a>, and plenty of container gantries out-reach it. But very few cranes anywhere get towed across half a planet in one piece, vertical, through canal locks and under drawbridges.<\/p>\n<h2>Manitowoc has run this exact play before<\/h2>\n<p>P-82 is the second crane in this series to make the trip. The first, Crane 70, left the same dock on November 18, 2025, behind the same tug, headed for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Washington state.<\/p>\n<p>That first run is the route map. The tow cleared the Seaway in the opening weeks, worked down the East Coast, stopped at Norfolk, and departed for the Panama Canal on December 19, according to MarineTraffic data cited by local reporting. It reached San Diego on February 6 and entered Seattle&#8217;s Elliott Bay on March 1. Call it three and a half months, door to door.<\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin Heavy Fabrication officials put the estimate for this second trip at about 120 days, weather permitting. Count from May 29 and you land in late September, which squares with the &#8220;late summer&#8221; arrival the shipyard&#8217;s spokeswoman gave Stars and Stripes.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a longer loop closing here, and the locals know it. During World War II, the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company built 28 submarines for the Navy on this same stretch of lakefront, and some of them fought in the Pacific war that started at the crane&#8217;s destination. &#8220;Manitowoc played a defining role in that same war effort,&#8221; Mayor Justin Nickels wrote in his send-off post, <a href=\"https:\/\/fox11online.com\/news\/local\/manitowoc-built-crane-sets-sail-for-navy-base-in-hawaii-oahu-pearl-harbor-harbor-st-lawrence-seaway-lake-michigan-atlantic-ocean-panama-canal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">reported by Fox 11<\/a>. Eighty-five years later, the town is shipping the Pacific fleet its tooling instead.<\/p>\n<h2>Pearl Harbor is mid-rebuild, and the crane is the cheap part<\/h2>\n<p>When P-82 arrives, it becomes the tenth crane at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility. Its job is straightforward: hoist parts and equipment up to the highest points of ships and submarines sitting in dry dock, per the shipyard.<\/p>\n<p>The yard it is joining is in the middle of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navsea.navy.mil\/Media\/News\/Article-View\/Article\/3687195\/pearl-harbor-naval-shipyard-celebrates-milestone-at-historic-dry-dock-construct\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">largest construction project in Navy history<\/a>. Dry Dock 5 carries a maximum project value of $3.4 billion, and Hawaii&#8217;s Chamber of Commerce expects the total investment to reach around $4.2 billion by the time it is done. It is the first new dry dock at Pearl Harbor since 1943.<\/p>\n<p>The reason is simple enough. The dock it replaces, Dry Dock 3, is too small and too shallow for the Virginia-class attack submarines that now make up the working core of the fleet. The new dock is designed for a 150-year service life and is scheduled to wrap up in 2028.<\/p>\n<p>Against numbers like that, the cranes are almost a rounding error. Going by the Navy&#8217;s contract awards, they run somewhere around $50 million apiece. So the 20-story machine currently crossing an ocean standing up is, in budget terms, the small purchase.<\/p>\n<p>One detail in the design tells you a lot about these old yards. Konecranes built the base to run on multiple rail sizes and shapes, straight or curved, because the Navy&#8217;s century-old shipyards each laid their tracks differently. Heavy machinery adapting itself to 1919-era infrastructure is a fair summary of this entire program. It is the same kind of oversized, one-off industrial work as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/two-cranes-fusion-reactor-france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the paired cranes assembling a fusion reactor in France<\/a>, just pointed at submarines instead of plasma.<\/p>\n<h2>Wisconsin is not done building these<\/h2>\n<p>The bigger picture behind the tow is the Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program, launched in 2018 to modernize the Navy&#8217;s four public shipyards: Norfolk, Portsmouth, Puget Sound and Pearl Harbor. A 2023 Government Accountability Office report described all four as badly in need of it.<\/p>\n<p>The crane pipeline is one visible piece of that. The Navy signed its first order with Konecranes in December 2019, and this May it exercised the seventh and final option under that agreement: a $51.2 million award for another 175-ton portal crane, bound for Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Maine. That brings the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/566002\/navfac-atlantic-awards-512-million-crane-modification-portsmouth-naval-shipyard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">contract&#8217;s cumulative value to $348.5 million, per NAVFAC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>All seven are Wisconsin builds. Which means the strange spectacle of a blue skyscraper leaving Manitowoc harbor on a barge has a few reruns left in it, and the lakefront crowds that gather for each departure already know the drill.<\/p>\n<p>As for P-82, the math is now mostly a calendar. If the 120-day estimate holds, the crane reaches Oahu around the end of September.
