It&#8217;s the crew sealed inside it, doing the quietest and most dangerous job in any navy, plus the years of training and the money it takes to keep them alive on a patrol that can last weeks. Turkey&#8217;s defense sector just built a machine designed to keep the patrol and take out the crew.<\/p>\n<p>At the SAHA Expo defense fair in Istanbul this past May, state-owned defense firm STM unveiled Tengiz, an extra-large uncrewed underwater vehicle built to do the deep work a crewed submarine does \u2014 intelligence runs, mine warfare, torpedo shots \u2014 with nobody on board. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turkiyetoday.com\/nation\/stm-unveils-3-new-autonomous-defense-systems-at-saha-2026-3219586\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">specs STM released at the show<\/a> put it at 11.2 meters (36.7 feet) long, 1.6 meters across, and 17.8 tons submerged, rated to operate below 400 meters and stay down for more than 20 days without any outside support.<\/p>\n<p>The name comes from an old Turkic word for the sea, and the pitch behind it is blunter than the one behind most underwater drones. A lot of these machines are sensors with a propeller, sent out to scout ahead of the real fleet. Tengiz carries torpedoes. STM built it to launch both the heavyweight 533 mm torpedoes a full-size submarine fires and the lightweight 324 mm torpedoes navies use to hunt other subs, and it can lay naval mines on top of that.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also cleared to carry the Akata, a Turkish anti-ship missile designed to fire from a submerged submarine. That is not a payload anyone bolts onto a scout drone.<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s the part that turns it into a mothership. Tengiz is built to carry STM&#8217;s smaller Neta 300 underwater drones and release them mid-mission, and it can launch the Alpagut loitering munition straight from depth. So it doesn&#8217;t just show up and shoot. It shows up, sends its own smaller robots off to run their own missions, and handles the command and sensor work through Havelsan&#8217;s ADVENT combat management system. A mothership that can seed a patch of ocean with smaller drones and coordinate them is a different problem for an enemy than a single torpedo boat, because now you&#8217;re not hunting one machine, you&#8217;re hunting a network. STM general manager \u00d6zg\u00fcr G\u00fclery\u00fcz said the drone is engineered to &#8220;execute nearly all critical missions typically performed by conventional submarines.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Twenty days down, and nobody needs to sleep<\/h2>\n<p>A crewed submarine&#8217;s patrol length is set by the people on it. They need air, food, sleep, and a reason not to lose their minds in a metal tube for a month. Take the crew out and that math changes.<\/p>\n<p>STM says Tengiz can stay submerged for more than 20 days with no external support, and at a 3-knot crawl it&#8217;s rated to cover 1,600 nautical miles. The company lines that endurance up against an average air-independent propulsion submarine, the diesel-electric boats built to sit quiet underwater for long stretches without surfacing.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a bold comparison for a machine that was revealed a few weeks ago and hasn&#8217;t proven it can do any of it yet. But it&#8217;s the target STM is aiming at, and the depth rating backs the ambition: below 400 meters, roughly 1,300 feet down, is real operating water for a combat platform, not a shallow coastal toy.<\/p>\n<h2>It ships in a box and launches off a flat-deck ship<\/h2>\n<p>The other design choice worth noticing is how Tengiz travels. It&#8217;s built to fit inside a standard 40-foot shipping container, which means it moves by truck, rail, or cargo ship like any other freight, then goes in the water without needing a dedicated submarine base to launch it.<\/p>\n<p>STM says it can deploy from a port, a logistics vessel, or a well-deck ship like the TCG Anadolu, Turkey&#8217;s amphibious flagship, which happened to be docked in Istanbul for the same expo. That container-and-flat-deck approach is quickly becoming the default for this whole class of machine. Germany&#8217;s TKMS took it a step further with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/german-yard-canada-defence-submarines\/\">crewless submarine built around a shipping container<\/a> rather than one sized to fit inside it. Either way the logic holds: make the drone as easy to move and launch as a stack of freight, and you stop needing the expensive infrastructure a real submarine demands.<\/p>\n<h2>Turkey didn&#8217;t bring one drone submarine to Istanbul. It brought two<\/h2>\n<p>If Tengiz sounds familiar, that&#8217;s because Turkey showed more than one uncrewed submarine at the same fair. A separate company, Datum Submarine Technologies, brought its own extra-large drone sub called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/drone-submarine-turkey\/\">Sinarit<\/a>, a slightly heavier 19.8-ton design also built to fire torpedoes and missiles while submerged. Two Turkish firms, two different drone submarines, one show floor.<\/p>\n<p>STM describes itself as Turkey&#8217;s biggest shipbuilder that doesn&#8217;t own a shipyard, an integrator that <a href=\"https:\/\/breakingdefense.com\/2026\/05\/turkeys-stm-debuts-new-unmanned-systems-is-really-open-to-gulf-collaboration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">bolts together subcontractors&#8217; work<\/a> and ships the result. It spent the last decade watching Turkey turn its Bayraktar drones into a serious export business, and this underwater push reads like the same playbook pointed at the seabed. Build it at home, price it to move, and sell it to navies that will never afford a crewed submarine and the decade of training that comes with one.<\/p>\n<h2>Everybody&#8217;s building these now<\/h2>\n<p>Tengiz didn&#8217;t arrive in a vacuum. The race to put a robot where a submarine crew used to be is on across most of the world&#8217;s serious navies, and it&#8217;s moving fast.<\/p>\n<p>China has been running <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/china-underwater-dron-manta-ray\/\">a drone shaped like a manta ray<\/a> through mine-hunting drills, and the US has its own Manta Ray program that Northrop Grumman and DARPA have already put through full-scale sea testing. South Korea built <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/south-korea-drone-submarines-enemy\/\">a hydrogen-powered robot that hunts enemy submarines<\/a> on its own for weeks at a time. And barely a month after Turkey&#8217;s reveal, Ukraine&#8217;s Global Mark rolled out its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navalnews.com\/naval-news\/2026\/06\/video-ukraines-massive-new-underwater-drone-sea-trident-st-1000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">first extra-large underwater drone<\/a>, the Sea Trident, at the Eurosatory fair in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>The appeal is easy to see from a planning desk. Crews are hard to recruit and expensive to train, crewed submarines cost billions and take a decade to build, and a machine you can lose without losing anyone changes what a navy is willing to risk. Most of these platforms are still concepts and prototypes, and almost none have proven they can do the mission when someone is shooting back. But the direction is unmistakable, and the pitch barely changes from one country to the next.<\/p>\n<p>None of this means the crewed submarine is going anywhere soon. A newly unveiled drone with a spec sheet is a promise, not a record, and Tengiz has years of testing between the Istanbul show floor and any real patrol. What Turkey put on display is the argument, not the finished product: that a machine 11 meters long and 17.8 tons heavy can be handed a submarine&#8217;s hardest jobs and sent to do them with nobody aboard to lose.
