The problem is that most of what a submarine wants to look at happens above the waterline, and the second it pushes a mast up to take that look, it starts giving the game away.<\/p>\n<p>Navies have been living with that trade since periscopes were invented. Two German companies spent June testing a way around it, and they published the results on July 14.<\/p>\n<p>GABLER, a L\u00fcbeck firm that has been making submarine masts and hull components for six decades, and FLANQ, a defense technology company up the coast in Rostock, ran sea trials on a small uncrewed boat called <a href=\"https:\/\/gabler-naval.com\/gabler-and-flanq-successfully-complete-surface-part-of-sea-acceptance-test-for-autonomous-torpedo-tube-launched-capability-vessel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ranger<\/a>. The idea is that the submarine never comes up at all. It fires the boat out of a torpedo tube, stays deep, and lets the boat do the looking.<\/p>\n<p>Which is a tidy concept right up until you ask the obvious question. A submarine torpedo tube is 21 inches across. Ranger is 4.5 meters long, which is 14 feet 9 inches. How do you get one through the other?<\/p>\n<h2>Everything about this boat is decided by a hole 21 inches wide<\/h2>\n<p>Twenty-one inches is one foot nine. The hull that has to fit through it is roughly eight and a half times longer than the opening is wide, and it has to come out nose-first with nothing sticking off it.<\/p>\n<p>That bore isn&#8217;t a design choice anybody gets to argue with. It&#8217;s the NATO standard, and it&#8217;s that size because that&#8217;s what a heavyweight torpedo needs.<\/p>\n<p>For a sense of what normally occupies the space, the US Navy&#8217;s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/Resources\/Fact-Files\/Display-FactFiles\/Article\/2167907\/mk-48-heavyweight-torpedo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">fact file<\/a> for the Mk 48 lists it at 21 inches in diameter, 3,744 pounds, with a 650-pound warhead. We went through the money side of building those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/america-torpedoes-ikea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So the tube was sized around a weapon, and Ranger has to live inside a shape drawn for something else entirely. Everything interesting about the design comes out of that one restriction.<\/p>\n<h2>The keel folds and the mast collapses<\/h2>\n<p>A surface boat needs two things that a torpedo tube will not tolerate. It needs a keel, because that&#8217;s what keeps a hull upright and tracking straight instead of sliding around broadside. And it needs a mast, because sensors that sit at water level can see roughly nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Both are exactly the sort of hardware that turns a cylinder into a jammed cylinder. GABLER&#8217;s answer is that both of them fold.<\/p>\n<p>The keel hinges flat against the hull and the sensor mast collapses down for the ride out, then the whole thing deploys once the boat is up and floating. That&#8217;s the part nobody has really covered, and it&#8217;s the harder engineering problem by a distance.<\/p>\n<p>The reason it&#8217;s hard is that a folding joint is a moving part, and moving parts on the outside of a hull have to survive pressure. When Gabler first showed the concept at a German naval workshop in September 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navalnews.com\/naval-news\/2025\/09\/gabler-unveils-submarine-launched-usv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Naval News reported<\/a> the common hull is rated to 300 meters.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s 985 feet down, around 30 times the pressure at the surface. Whatever hinges the keel and drops the mast has to still work after sitting at that depth, and then work again the next time.<\/p>\n<p>So it isn&#8217;t really a boat with folding bits. The tube launch has not been shown.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>There&#8217;s a reason it&#8217;s electric, and it isn&#8217;t emissions<\/h2>\n<p>Ranger runs an electric drivetrain, and in this case that reads less like a choice than like the only option on the table.<\/p>\n<p>A torpedo tube gets flooded and equalized with the sea before anything leaves it. Whatever comes out has been sitting in cold salt water at depth, and it has to start working immediately on the way up. A combustion engine wants air, a dry intake and an exhaust path, and it wants all three at the exact moment none of them exist.<\/p>\n<p>Batteries and a motor don&#8217;t care. They&#8217;ll sit flooded in a sealed housing and spin the second they&#8217;re told to.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a second benefit that Gabler hasn&#8217;t quantified publicly. An electric drive doesn&#8217;t put an engine&#8217;s acoustic signature into the water a few hundred feet from a submarine that would very much rather not be located. Neither company has published a noise figure, so treat that as the physics rather than a claim.<\/p>\n<h2>Nobody has fired one out of a submarine yet<\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s where the coverage gets loose, and it&#8217;s worth being precise about.<\/p>\n<p>Gabler&#8217;s own headline says the companies completed the <em>surface part<\/em> of the Sea Acceptance Test. The body of the same release says they completed the Sea Acceptance Test, full stop. Several trade outlets ran the second version in their headlines and dropped the qualifier.<\/p>\n<p>The distinction matters. What was tested in June is that the boat floats, handles, deploys its gear and runs its systems in real sea conditions. Felix David, the TTL USV project lead at Gabler, said in the release that the tests <em>&#8220;confirmed the maturity of the vehicle at this stage of development.&#8221;<\/em> That phrasing is doing honest work.<\/p>\n<p>What has not been shown publicly is the bit the entire concept rests on: a submerged submarine firing the thing out of a tube and the thing surviving it. Until that happens, Ranger is a very clever boat that is the right shape for a torpedo tube.<\/p>\n<p>A few other blanks are worth noting. No host submarine class has been named. No customer has been announced. And no speed, range, endurance or weight figures exist in public for anyone to check.<\/p>\n<h2>The US Navy has been running the underwater version for years<\/h2>\n<p>Firing robots out of torpedo tubes isn&#8217;t new, and Ranger isn&#8217;t the first thing to try it.<\/p>\n<p>The American programs went a different direction, though. L3Harris built the Iver4 900, an underwater vehicle that leaves an attack submarine&#8217;s tube, works for up to 40 hours and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/america-drone-torpedo-tube-iver4-900\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swims back in through the same hole<\/a>. The hard part there was the recovery hardware, not the drone.<\/p>\n<p>Every one of those stays underwater. That&#8217;s the split. Ranger is built to break the surface on purpose and sit there with a mast up, which is the one thing a submarine cannot afford to do itself.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a very German bit of engineering logic, and it fits a pattern. German yards have been quietly stacking up uncrewed naval hardware alongside the crewed stuff, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/german-yard-canada-defence-submarines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an 82-foot hydrogen-powered crewless boat built out of shipping containers<\/a> at the yard that just won Canada&#8217;s submarine contract.<\/p>\n<h2>The strike version has had two names in ten months<\/h2>\n<p>One small thing that suggests the program is still moving underneath the press releases.<\/p>\n<p>When Gabler unveiled the concept in September 2025, there were two vehicles on the same hull: Ranger for reconnaissance, reusable, and Raider for single-use strike missions carrying a customer-supplied warhead.<\/p>\n<p>The July release calls the one-way-attack variant Strike. It also still refers to &#8220;Ranger and Raider&#8221; a couple of paragraphs later, in the same document.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s either a rename in progress or two products where there used to be one, and Gabler hasn&#8217;t explained which.<\/p>\n<p>The partnership itself dates to August 20, 2025, announced at a Danish defense show. Ten months from handshake to a boat in the water off Rostock is quick for naval hardware, and it&#8217;s the part of this that European navies will actually be watching. Gabler is handling commercialization and integration onto host submarines from here.<\/p>\n<p>The next test is the one that decides whether any of it is real. Load Ranger into a flooded 21-inch tube, fire it from a submerged submarine, and see whether the keel still unfolds when it gets to the top.
