The Air Force has been pouring money into Collaborative Combat Aircraft, and last month it cleared Anduril&#8217;s YFQ-44A Fury and General Atomics&#8217; YFQ-42A for initial production. Cheap-ish uncrewed jets flying alongside expensive crewed ones is basically settled doctrine at this point.<\/p>\n<p>What nobody had really done was drag that same concept sideways into the rotary world. Which is a problem, because attack helicopter crews have been getting chewed up in Ukraine by loitering munitions, shoulder-fired missiles and FPV drones flown by kids with goggles.<\/p>\n<p>That is the gap Anduril just walked into. On Monday, at the opening of the Farnborough International Airshow, the company pulled the sheet off Thunder: a Group 5 uncrewed tiltrotor built to fly as a wingman for the AH-64 Apache and the Army&#8217;s forthcoming MV-75 Cheyenne II.<\/p>\n<p>No pilot inside. Configurable bays full of Hellfires, rockets or launched effects. And an autonomy stack meant to keep the thing glued to a crewed helicopter&#8217;s wing at low altitude while it hunts, spots and shoots.<\/p>\n<h2>An Apache&#8217;s payload with a Cheyenne&#8217;s legs<\/h2>\n<p>The pitch from Anduril is basically &#8220;pick two.&#8221; Shane Arnott, the company&#8217;s senior vice president of programs and engineering, told reporters at Farnborough that they shaped the aircraft to carry roughly what an Apache carries while matching the speed and reach of the MV-75. Which, if it holds up in a real airframe, is an aggressive spec sheet for something that folds into a shipping container.<\/p>\n<p>The weapons math is the part that gets people&#8217;s attention. Per Arnott, speaking to Breaking Defense, the main bay handles up to 10 Hellfires, 16 air-launched effects, or 76 rockets.<\/p>\n<p>That last number isn&#8217;t arbitrary. TWZ reports it comes from four 19-round pods of laser-guided APKWS II 70mm rockets. The missiles don&#8217;t have to be Hellfires either: FlightGlobal reports Boeing&#8217;s JAGM and Anduril&#8217;s own Barracuda-100 are on the menu, with the launched effects being Altius-600s. Arnott called that maximum-rocket configuration &#8220;beast mode.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Everything rides internally until it&#8217;s needed, then deploys through side-mounted doors. And the nose is a separate module entirely, packed with up to a dozen counter-drone interceptors, because small drones shooting at helicopters is now a real problem somebody has to answer.<\/p>\n<p>Group 5, for anyone not fluent in Pentagon drone taxonomy, is the top tier: anything over 1,320 pounds. Thunder is not a Switchblade you throw out of a pickup. Full-scale surrogate aircraft have flown; Thunder itself has not.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Why a tiltrotor and not just a helicopter<\/h2>\n<p>The airframe isn&#8217;t off the shelf, and the partner list explains a lot. Anduril and Archer Aviation teamed up in December 2024 to build a hybrid-electric aircraft for defense work. Thunder is what came out.<\/p>\n<p>Archer supplies the series hybrid-electric powertrain, leaning on the work it did for its Midnight air taxi. Anduril supplies the autonomy. And the rotor technology traces back to Karem Aircraft and Overair, its collapsed air-taxi spinoff, whose patents Archer picked up before signing an exclusive agreement with Karem in December 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The relevant piece is Optimum Speed Tiltrotor, which varies rotor RPM depending on what the aircraft is doing. That matters for two reasons: it keeps fuel burn down in cruise, and it keeps the acoustic signature down on the way in.<\/p>\n<p>An aircraft sneaking under modern air defenses would very much like to be quiet. It would also like to not need a runway, which is the other half of the tiltrotor argument. Thunder takes off vertically and cruises on the wing.<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s the container. Anduril says the whole thing packs into a standard shipping container for transport by road, sea, air or rail. That is a deliberate choice for a Pacific fight, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/us-army-boats-pacific-drones\/\">getting anything to a runway is the entire problem<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Three drones per Apache, and nobody flying them<\/h2>\n<p>The concept of operations is where Thunder gets genuinely different from a fighter CCA. This isn&#8217;t one drone tucked behind a stealth fighter at 40,000 feet. It&#8217;s a formation of them down in the weeds.<\/p>\n<p>Arnott describes groups of three to six flying alongside an Apache or a Cheyenne, and he&#8217;s specific that the crew is commanding rather than controlling them, per DefenseScoop. In plain English: the human in the Apache tells the formation what to achieve, not how to fly.<\/p>\n<p>Anduril&#8217;s own arithmetic is that three Thunders per Apache gives a combat aviation brigade triple the available munitions on a sortie without a single extra pilot in harm&#8217;s way, at what it calls &#8220;a fraction of the cost.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The command interface is a detail worth noting. Anduril wants crews running the drones through the cockpit displays they already have, not a tablet velcroed to a knee. Anyone who has watched military UI decisions go sideways will understand why that&#8217;s a fight worth picking early.<\/p>\n<p>The autonomy itself runs on Lattice, the same software family Anduril has pushed across its other platforms. Executives were cagey about the details, but Arnott confirmed it&#8217;s been flying on surrogate aircraft for about two years.<\/p>\n<h2>Ukraine wrote this spec sheet<\/h2>\n<p>The influence isn&#8217;t subtle. Anduril president Chris Brose told reporters the design draws directly on what the US and its European allies have been learning in Ukraine, and framed the core problem as getting mass into a tactical fight where somebody still has to reach into the deep battle.<\/p>\n<p>Translation: crewed rotorcraft can&#8217;t survive the modern near-surface fight alone. Something cheaper has to absorb the risk.<\/p>\n<p>Rich Drake, who runs Anduril&#8217;s UK and Europe operation, put the case more bluntly at the pre-show briefing. Man-portable air defenses, loitering munitions and cheap interceptors have all stacked up against helicopters flying low, and the crews, he said, are &#8220;too valuable to lose.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The numbers back him up. Russia and Ukraine have both lost dozens of helicopters to shoulder-fired missiles, loitering munitions and FPV drones that cost a rounding error compared to what they kill. It&#8217;s the same brutal cost asymmetry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/ukranian-boat-launched-drone-water\/\">that has Ukraine launching interceptor drones off crewless boats<\/a> rather than firing million-dollar missiles at $30,000 Shaheds.<\/p>\n<p>Brose is honest about where that leads. Like Fury, Thunder is meant to be attritable, though he conceded attritability is &#8220;obviously in the eye of the beholder.&#8221; Which is the polite way of saying nobody wants to lose one, but losing one shouldn&#8217;t end the mission.<\/p>\n<h2>A Kiowa Warrior replacement nobody asked Anduril for<\/h2>\n<p>There&#8217;s a real hole in the US Army&#8217;s inventory that Thunder happens to fit into snugly.<\/p>\n<p>Aviation Week frames the concept as a throwback to the Bell OH-58D Kiowa Warrior, the crewed armed scout the Army retired in 2015. The service tried to replace it with the Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft program, then canceled FARA in February 2024 and has been covering the gap with a handful of General Atomics MQ-1C Gray Eagles ever since.<\/p>\n<p>Armed scout has been a mission without a dedicated platform for a decade.<\/p>\n<p>The Army knows it, too. Its aviation directorate has spent the past couple of years working with industry on requirements for a rotary-wing CCA of its own, though nothing has been formally competed yet.<\/p>\n<p>Brose was cagey about how anyone actually buys these things, telling DefenseScoop that acquisition can be sorted out later and the immediate job is establishing that the need exists and that the capability can reach the force quickly. That&#8217;s contractor code for &#8220;please, someone write us a requirement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The international angle is less theoretical. Anduril was down-selected earlier this year for the British Army&#8217;s Project NYX, which is looking for exactly this: loyal wingman drones for Apaches. Debuting Thunder in England, at a show Anduril is exhibiting at for the first time, with UK partners including GKN Aerospace on the build, was not an accident.<\/p>\n<h2>The category went from empty to crowded in a year<\/h2>\n<p>Anduril wasn&#8217;t the only shop that spotted this gap.<\/p>\n<p>Boeing revealed its Collaborative Transformational Rotorcraft family at AUSA last October, also tiltrotors, also pitched at the Apache. Sikorsky, now a Lockheed Martin subsidiary, unveiled its Nomad family days earlier, though those use a rotor-blown wing tail-sitter layout rather than tilting rotors.<\/p>\n<p>What Thunder has going for it is timing and a track record. Anduril spent about three years building this quietly, derived from lessons on Fury, which just went into initial production and fired its first live AMRAAM earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>The mission list is also broad on purpose: strike, fire support, ISR, maritime patrol, anti-submarine work, search and rescue, contested logistics. If one customer says no, there&#8217;s another profile to pitch.<\/p>\n<h2>It still hasn&#8217;t flown<\/h2>\n<p>For all the hardware talk, Thunder itself has not left the ground. Anduril has flown full-scale surrogates, and Brose expects the real aircraft to fly sometime in 2027, with Arnott targeting production in the 2029 to 2030 window depending on demand. Shephard reports initial output around 50 aircraft a year, scaling if customers materialize. Anduril says government customers are already engaged but won&#8217;t name them.<\/p>\n<p>So what was at Farnborough was a full-scale model on a stand and a promise to fly next year. The gap between that and three of these keeping an Apache alive over a contested landing zone is enormous, and Anduril knows it.<\/p>\n<p>But the reveal did the job it was built to do.
