Too fast to intercept, too maneuverable to track, the thing that decides how a war opens before anyone can react. Russia has fired them at Ukraine. China rolls them through Beijing on parade.<\/p>\n<p>America&#8217;s version, after more than $12 billion and the better part of a decade, currently amounts to eight missiles. The Army builds them at roughly one a month.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the Dark Eagle, officially the Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon, and the Army has spent the first half of 2026 finishing the very first battery of them at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. It&#8217;s the milestone the service missed in 2023, then missed again in 2025. Now that the hardware is almost all in place, U.S. Central Command wants to load those missiles onto trucks and send them to the Middle East to shoot at Iran.<\/p>\n<h2>A battery is four trucks and eight missiles<\/h2>\n<p>Physically, a Dark Eagle battery isn&#8217;t much to look at. Four wheeled launchers, each an M983 tractor hauling a trailer with two missile canisters, plus a command truck that runs the whole thing. Do the math and a full battery carries eight ready rounds. That&#8217;s the inventory.<\/p>\n<p>Each missile is a two-piece design the Army and Navy built together. A two-stage solid rocket booster throws it out of the atmosphere, then an unpowered glide body separates and skips back down toward the target on a flat, shallow path. That glide body, the Common Hypersonic Glide Body, is made by Dynetics, a Leidos subsidiary.<\/p>\n<p>The glide profile is the entire point. A normal ballistic missile flies a predictable arc you can plot and try to shoot down. This one maneuvers on the way in, which is what makes it hard to catch. The Army says the missile travels more than five times the speed of sound and can reach targets over 1,700 miles away, with some reporting putting the peak speed as high as Mach 17. For that, the Army is finishing a single battery.<\/p>\n<p>Getting even that far was ugly. A test failed in June 2022. The Pentagon scrubbed another that October to work out why. The fielding date, first set for 2023, slid to 2025, then slid again into 2026. A clean end-to-end flight test at Cape Canaveral in December 2024 finally proved the full missile worked start to finish, and another successful launch followed in March 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The failures did more than embarrass people. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/defensescoop.com\/2026\/07\/07\/gao-pentagon-hypersonic-programs-schedule-constraints-production-woes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Government Accountability Office<\/a>, problems found in testing created a production bottleneck that forced both the Army and Navy to stop building missiles until the design actually flew. You can&#8217;t mass-produce a round you haven&#8217;t confirmed works.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2026, the Army put the program on a real production footing with a $2.7 billion contract to Leidos, the first production award for the common glide-body effort. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/291834\/behind_dark_eagle_contracting_at_the_speed_of_hypersonic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Army&#8217;s own contracting command<\/a> described pulling it together on a compressed schedule as anything but routine.<\/p>\n<h2>The missiles are still partly built by hand<\/h2>\n<p>The one-a-month pace has a straightforward explanation. Dark Eagle isn&#8217;t rolling off an automated line. GAO and Army program documents describe an assembly process that isn&#8217;t fully automated and still relies on manual integration of key components. These missiles are, in meaningful part, put together by hand.<\/p>\n<p>The current build rate is about one a month, and the plan under the new contract is to roughly double that to 24 a year. Those are not the numbers of a weapon you use in volume. The contrast with where the rest of the Navy&#8217;s munitions thinking is headed is sharp, with startups now pressing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/america-torpedoes-ikea\/\">cheap, mass-produced torpedo drones out of Rhode Island plants<\/a> like flat-pack furniture.<\/p>\n<p>Cost tells the same story. Reporting on the current small production lots puts the fly-away price of a single round at around $15 million. The Congressional Budget Office, in a 2023 estimate for a hypothetical buy of 300 similar boost-glide missiles, put the program-acquisition figure closer to $41 million each, and noted the Army&#8217;s first tiny buys of eight would run higher still. Either way, nobody is firing these like Tomahawks.<\/p>\n<h2>Now CENTCOM wants to send them to Iran<\/h2>\n<p>Which brings us to the news. In late April, U.S. Central Command formally asked the Pentagon for permission to deploy Dark Eagle to the Middle East, according to a Bloomberg report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/us-eyes-first-ever-hypersonic-dark-eagle-deployment-iran-pushes-beyond-strike-range\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">picked up by Fox News<\/a> and other defense outlets. The targets: Iranian ballistic-missile launchers that had been moved out of reach of the Army&#8217;s shorter-range Precision Strike Missile, which tops out around 300 miles.<\/p>\n<p>The closest the system had come to a real deployment before this was July 2025, when the Army flew two launchers to northern Australia for the Talisman Sabre exercise. It was the first time Dark Eagle had been set up outside the United States. No missile was fired. The point was to prove the Army could move the thing and run it from a forward position.<\/p>\n<p>The Iran request came as part of options presented to President Trump, amid a fragile ceasefire in the theater, and it would be the first operational use of an American hypersonic weapon anywhere. The Pentagon hasn&#8217;t said yes, and it hasn&#8217;t given a timeline.<\/p>\n<p>The math is stark. The entire U.S. inventory is those eight missiles. Sending a weapon that scarce and that expensive into a regional fight is the kind of call that has some analysts uneasy. Jennifer Kavanagh, director of military analysis at Defense Priorities, told Military Watch Magazine the move &#8220;suggests that the Pentagon has lost all perspective,&#8221; arguing the U.S. shouldn&#8217;t be spending its highest-end missiles on Iran. It&#8217;s the same demand for new long-reach tools driving the recoverable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonocion.com\/us\/america-drone-torpedo-tube-iver4-900\/\">drones the Navy is now running out of submarine torpedo tubes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The 2027 budget wants to hand it to the Navy<\/h2>\n<p>There&#8217;s one more wrinkle, and it&#8217;s a strange one. Even as the Army finishes its first battery, the administration&#8217;s fiscal 2027 budget proposal calls for shutting down Dark Eagle production for the Army and moving the whole program to the Navy.<\/p>\n<p>So the service that spent five years and $12 billion getting this thing to the field could be out of the missile-building business right as the field version arrives.<\/p>\n<p>Where America actually stands is more complicated than &#8220;we&#8217;re losing.&#8221; Russia and China both field operational hypersonic weapons, and Russia has fired its Kinzhal in Ukraine, though Ukrainian Patriot batteries have reportedly intercepted some, which dented the idea that these things can&#8217;t be touched. The U.S. isn&#8217;t so much behind on the underlying physics as behind on turning it into hardware it can build in quantity. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/crs-product\/IF11991\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Congressional Research Service<\/a> lays out a program that keeps closing that specific gap, slowly, and keeps slipping its own deadlines to do it.<\/p>\n<h2>Eight missiles is a scalpel, not a stockpile<\/h2>\n<p>Strip away the speed and the money and Dark Eagle is a very small number of very expensive missiles that took a very long time to build. Eight rounds, roughly one a month, partly by hand, for something north of $12 billion.<\/p>\n<p>That makes it a precision instrument for the highest-value targets a commander can&#8217;t hit any other way, not a weapon you spend freely. Whether eight partly hand-built missiles pointed at Iran reads as a deterrent or a demonstration is the question the Pentagon is sitting on right now.
