We love Lucid at AutoNotion. Dave McQuilling has repeatedly told me it’s the best EV he’s driven<\/a>. There’s really no doubt it’s a luxurious experience, if you’re into that kinda thing. That kinda thing being expensive EVs.<\/p>\n

The stock market, however, is not feeling the love.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, July 14, 2026, Lucid’s shares were halted multiple times for volatility, cratering more than 50% at their lows to around $2.37 at one point. The trigger: a report claiming the automaker was staring down bankruptcy. Panic did the rest.<\/p>\n

Lucid has been losing billions, but it’s not bankrupt<\/h2>\n

The rumor started when an EV blog ran an “exclusive” claiming Lucid had brought in restructuring firm AlixPartners, and that the advisor had laid out options for the board including going private or filing for Chapter 11.<\/p>\n

Here’s the thing: that report leaned on two anonymous sources and a website with no real sourcing track record. And it smushed together two very different things. Hiring AlixPartners when you’re burning cash and cutting staff is routine housekeeping. A board actively weighing Chapter 11 is not. The blog treated them as the same story.<\/p>\n

Lucid’s denial was fast and specific. The company told Forbes<\/a> the rumors were “completely false,” and said as much in a filing with the SEC. Chief Communications Officer Nick Twork said AlixPartners “has not recommended bankruptcy to management or the Board,” and that the firm is only helping improve execution and strengthen operations.<\/p>\n

Twork added that Lucid has “sufficient liquidity to carry its operations well into next year,” a claim its own most recent quarterly filing backs up. The company reported roughly $4.7 billion in pro-forma liquidity at the end of Q1 2026.<\/p>\n

The market eventually agreed. After closing down on Tuesday, the stock soared<\/em> about 29% the next day to around $5.95, actually higher than where it sat before the rumor broke. So much for bankruptcy.<\/p>\n

Why people believed it so fast<\/h2>\n

It’s easy to see why the panic caught fire, though. Lucid has been having a genuinely rough year.<\/p>\n

New CEO Silvio Napoli took over on June 1 and immediately started swinging. Lucid laid off 18% of its US workforce in June, its second deep cut in four months, gutted and rebuilt almost its entire executive suite, and pulled its 2026 production guidance entirely.<\/p>\n

The financials give the fear something to chew on. Lucid delivered 15,841 vehicles in 2025, a 55% jump over 2024, but it also built 17,840 and posted a net loss of $2.7 billion<\/a>. Then it opened 2026 with another $1.13 billion loss in the first quarter alone.<\/p>\n

It’s a long way from “Tesla’s biggest rival,” as Lucid was once billed. Even with the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund holding a majority stake and propping it up, the company keeps bleeding money faster than it sells cars.<\/p>\n

Lucid still has big plans, including a robotaxi push with Uber<\/a> and a smaller, more affordable SUV on the way. The next real checkpoint is its Q2 earnings call on August 4, when we find out how much of that $4.7 billion cushion is left.<\/p>\n

Only time will tell if Lucid can carve out a place in an American market where drivers keep steering clear of EVs. For now, at least, “not bankrupt” will have to do.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
