And he liked it.

“That innovation and attention to quality sum up the Rivian R2. It’s a smartly designed vehicle that takes a few risks. But it has to, given the segment it operates in,” McQuilling concluded.

The R2 was Rivian’s latest gamble after a difficult brand launch around the pandemic. A bit more compact and marketed to younger adventure seekers, the R2 is meant to be stylish, modern, and capable. All for a pretty okay price point (although the launch version is a lot more than the base model). In 2025, Rivian reported a full-year net loss of $3.6 billion, with its automotive division recording a negative gross profit of $432 million after producing 42,28 vehicles. Despite the growing pains of the determined and quirky EV startup, Rivian’s CEO, RJ Scaringe, said in a press roundtable that he’s not worried at all.

In fact, bring it on!

Rivian roundtable reveals Rivian CEO’s desire for a pickup and even more… Just gotta wait

Rivian is inviting competition.

When one journalist asked Rivian if it was concerned with the upcoming electric pickups from cost-effective sources like Ford and Slate, Rivian shrugged it off.

Scaringe said: “I think it’s great. I so deeply believe we need more choice. More choice will lead to a better understanding of what it’s like to have an EV. There will be more investments into charging infrastructure and more products that appeal to different customers.”

He pointed out that nobody bats an eye when there are 300-plus competitors in the same segment over in ICE land. You never fear for the industry if BMW launches a new car. For the same reason, he wants the EV space to have “more than one to two great, compelling choices.”

A few years back, the only “highly compelling” EV option was a Tesla. But Tesla didn’t speak to everyone or meet every electric customer’s needs. With very few EV options, many publications (including us) compared Rivian to Tesla. But in reality, the Model Y and the R2 are as different as can be. The R2 offers off-roading capabilities far beyond those of many other EV options. It’s a completely different market.

Adding more electric vehicles will continue to diversify the market and increase demand. While the R2 has just come out, Rivian was already discussing its highly anticipated R3. This will be a compact crossover hatchback in the mid-$30,000 range, Rivian’s cheapest vehicle yet. If anything, all of these cheaper EVs only force other automakers to consider cheap EVs if they want to keep up. Maybe we’ll see new car prices go down after reaching beyond $50,000 the past year.

Not everyone wants a bulky, extravagant SUV. Choices.

The journalist wanted Scaringe to backtrack a bit. He said he’s not afraid of Ford and Slate… Does that mean Rivian is making a pickup? It seemed like the best option after Rivian expressed a need for more variants. Scaringe didn’t say no, but did mention that the R3 will be revealed and manufactured before anything else comes out.

During the pandemic, Rivian launched the R1T and R1S simultaneously, leading to quite a disaster. Rivian ended up having to dig itself out of the “complexity we had instantly inserted.” This time, Rivian is trying to keep things simple. First, the launch version of the R2. Then, the other variants. Then, the R3. Then, a performance variant as part of the newly formed Rivian Adventure Deparmtent (RAD), which will make its own vehicles as well.

For now, Rivian wants to satisfy the demand for the R2. But even if Rivian did make a pickup, it seems it’s not worried about other upcoming electric vehicles at all. Its pickup would potentially offer something different than the others, just like the R2. But what is that? We don’t know.

AutoNotion’s Dave McQuilling recently had the opportunity to drive the new Rivian R2, which notably has barely any buttons at …

[6
37
post-10278","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-electric-vehicles-evs","tag-rivian","resize-featured-image
["GET
